Microsoft does use linux!

No they don't. That would be like Canon using Xerox machines in their building. Or it would be like IBM using Dell computers.

Hotmail was running *nix for a long time, I think they finally get their backend off it though. It could be knowing your enemy, or just using the best tool for the job. ...
 
I can assure you in no uncertain terms that Microsoft is not using Linux in production machines.

Microsoft has stated publicly on many occasions that Linux is Microsoft's biggest threat.

Now, MS may use other variants of unix for certain servers (I do not know), but I would bet body parts that they don't use Linux on production boxes.

Last time I heard about it, Microsoft uses Unix-like or Unix systems to make the cd images, to protect against viruses.
 
I can see them using BSD or some other UNIX system but not Linux. I find it halarious how Linux fanboys think that MS is always using their stuff when it is BSD that Hotmail used to run on at one time. BSD != Linux, it is a lot better than Linux.
 
Not necessarily. BSD and 'nix boxes are only as good as the person who configured them (although the BSDs do rock)

Everyone uses the BSDs. It is even my opinion that the Linux kernel possibly violates the GPL in its use of BSD, but I have done absolutely no research into this just yet.

Linux is open source, not a proprietary product like Windows. There's 50 million different variants of it out there produced by different companies and individuals (e.g. Red Hat, Mandrake, Gentoo, what have you). It's not owned by one company, so there would basically be no way that Microsoft could buy them out and snuff Linux for good.
