Just saw this on CNN.. Apparently cashiers at Best Buy were automatically scanning and handing out MSN promo disks to users who paid for their purchases via credit/debit card. Customers were told the promo disk scan scan was for "inventory tracking", but what actually happened was that people were getting signed up for MSN without their knowledge. Baaaad business.

*Best Buy Spokesperson Lawyer*

We would like to unequivicoally state that it IS NOT Best Buy policy to sign up and/or charge anyone for anything w/o their express written consent. This was an unfortunate accident and we would like to add that the employee that accidentally signed Mr. Kim up for MSN is no longer employed by Best Buy Inc. Futher, we have refunded Mr. Kim's money and given him a FREE "Best of World's Funniest Animals" DVD for his trouble.

^^^Just you watch. That's what's going to happen.

That too. I except nothing at BBuy. I don't walk out of there w/anything, not even a piece of paper that I didn't explicity pick up off the shelf and purchase. I don't even let them put sales flyers in my bag...that's how paranoid I am of BBuy.

That said, I'm in there every week b/c they have awesome Hot Deals...and sometimes give you rebates that you don't deserve. ;)

Whoop-di-fricken-doo!

You'd think they could at least give him something worth watching.

Didn't BestBuy/MSN get ripped off couple years ago in california. I remember BB offering $500 shopping spree at BB if they signed up with MSN. Apparently laws in california were consumer friendly and BB ended up taking it up the @**.

I hope BB pays for this. If I find a hotdeal at BB I will just walk nextdoor to CC and have them PM that item.

On a semi-related note - has anyone else signed up for a best buy credit card and then find out that you actually signed up for TWO cards?

Happened to me. I signed up for best buy card on one of their 24 month 0% interest deals. Like 6 months after I signed up, I get a card in the mail telling me that there have been some changes to my account and that I need to call in to find out about them. I was confused as hell because I only have one credit card, and it wasn't through this company so I call them up to see WTF is going on. Turns out, when I signed up for a best buy card, I was automatically signed up for an ADDITIONAL credit card as well that had an open account.

Gee. That was nice of them to tell me.

Im a BB employee, and here is something most of you dont know.

First, about the MSN, they need info like an address and all kinds of stuff, if you arnt completely stupid, youl know they are doing something. Also, You must sign something that tells you what you are getting. And further, on your recipt it tells you that you got the trial or whatever, as well as givs you a user name an password. so you have to be completely retarded to not know you got it.

You signed for that as well, its on the bottem of the credit app. If you didnt know, that does not hurt your credit, its given to you on the same credit inquary. And the first time you use it, you get a free $25 gift card to BB.

IF they signed up this way they should NOT have any trouble getting out of it.

They didnt ask to sign up they dont need to pay.

Damn, BB bought up the Canadian chain Futureshop not too long ago. Hopefully Futureshop doesn't start with this kind of crap.

Likeliest probability: This guy is lying out of his ass.

It's possible, though extremely improbable, that Samuel Kim's name, contact and billing address were already on file in the Best Buy database to be pulled up and attached to a MSN account. It's again possible but improbable that the employee took the 3-5 minutes needed to complete the signup on his POS system and process it without Mr. Kim notice. And thirdly, it's possible - but improbable - that when Mr. Kim was handed his receipt, he signed the contract agreement printed at the time of sale even though he paid by debit.

Lastly, as far as I know, the point-of-sale system linked with MSN requires a credit card be linked to the customer's account, even if you do pay by debit - they don't run their own credit bureau, they just start billing the CC they have on file under the customer's name. He said he paid by debit. Where would they draw his CC information from? That wouldn't fly.

When MSN is rung up, you first need the persons address, phone and such. this is usually done by looking up the phone number, and usually most of the info is already in the system. The system also needs the drivers licence number. After that you need to select what plan they want (free 30 day trial, $75 for signing up for a year, $200 for 2 years, or the free 6 months with a computer). After that the customer is made to sign the little tough pad that explains the contract. Then the screen name is put into the system. Lastly the "MSN" is added to the sale, and the cost of the $0.02 CD is credited back to the sale, along with any credit for signing up for the 1 or 2 years. If there is still a ballence, a they system needs a form of payment. this payment is completely seperate from the MSN. Infact once the card is swiped for MSN, your are a customer. Even if the employee cancels or voids the transaction, you are still going to get billed.

For this to work, the the employee needs the info for the account. if your being asked info like address, phone number, and drivers licence number you should know something is up. Then for the credit/depit card, you again, should wonder why they need it. And if all that is some how done without the customers knoladge, they need to sign. You could "bump" the screen and the system may accept it, but then if the customer disputes the charg, he didint sign for it, so that would be the end to that. And if you did sign up for MSN, with or without your knoladge, your recipt would be 2 time longer from all the crap that is on it dealing with MSN.

As you can see, its not that easy to not know. This guy is a complete retard. And i say again, this case is going nowhere.
