spherrod, you didn't have my nightmare one evening, when a perfectly legit coa (purchased last year, before the new ridiculous ban) wouldn't activate. Got on the phone with our friends at microsoft india, and asked them a simple question.....why won't this brand new, never before used, coa not activate?? Should be a fairly simple question to answer, no?

They didn't have an answer. Shoot, they didn't have a clue! When I'd press the issue, and tell them that I need an answer why a legit, LEGAL coa for windows xp home will not activate, they'd mumble something, then put me on hold......which, about 30 seconds later, would mysteriously disconnect me!

I wasn't being an ass, I sure wasn't raising my voice or being an obnoxious american, I just wanted an answer to my question, and felt that windows activation tech support people should be able to actually ANSWER a question concerning windows activation problems. I got hung up on 5 or 6 times before I finally gave up on it that night, due to incredible frustration. :|

I can only imagine the frustration of someone with a legit copy of windows who's suddenly been informed that microsoft thinks they're running a pirated copy, and demands they discontinue doing so. It's just a matter of time, imho......

Sounds like a bad experience - I'm not saying you weren't totally in the right but having made many calls to Microsoft's Activation Support team in the past as well as other departments I've always been very impressed with the service. In comparision to Dell (thankfully we now have Gold Support!) their level of english and ability to resolve the problem were very good IMO.

Scored indicates a completed action, which I highly doubt the validity of at this point.

_Those who simply submit a piracy report ? giving details of when, where and from whom the operating system was purchased ? and send in the counterfeit copy will get either version of Windows at half price

Umm, if those are the only options, does that mean otherwise your OS is locked? Or is it just updates for now. This is great, I see it leading to me paying $15 a month for my OS. Thank god Linux is getting better.

READ THE ARTICLE. You will get prompted before they do the validation.

Sounds like this Genuine Advantage software can't tell for sure if you're running a legit copy.

They just want to know where the pirated copies are being distributed from.

DELL

Seriously, When XP 1st came out Dell printed hundreds of thousands of brouchers with a valid XP CD key on it.

Programs like this are just for catching the casual "pirate" (ARRRGGGG).
Anyone who actually knows what they are doing will find the app that inevitably will come out that will foil this dasterdly plot of Microshaft.

This reminds me of the old Intel serial numbers (i think) that were on processors a few years ago and the big stick about. Glad I use Tiger for my lappy and only keep my XP box for gaming...

Brouchers? Don't you mean vouchers or something?

yeaaa righttt. why do you even need windows updates anyhow? if you know how to set up a computer securely you really don't need them.

edit besides software release groups always have the windows updates anyways.

that's where you get the security (critical) updates the easiest... unless you go to technet.com manually or something... How else do you "set up a computer securely" without these patches ?

alternate browser+good firewall.

I've never really bothered with windows updates and not once have I had problems. And you know what? I'm not bothering with longhorn either. Too much bull**** copy protection.

IMO the security fixes are not really needed; A decent hardware firewall stops like 90% of malware and hacks even without the updates applied. The other 10% can easily remedied by a freeware antivirus/spyware scanner and safe surfing.

i will eventually buy xp, because after seeing how demanding longhorn/vista is and how anal MS is being about protection, im sticking with xp.

so what if you bought xp from wheverever, and was lead to belive it was legit all these years.. now mickeysoft says nope, you gotta pay us big time becuase it wasn't and we need more money cause we suck.

it seems mickeysoft is not happy unless there making headlines every week, are all the people working for them just complete morons.

i bought xp pro on ebay long time ago - it came with a cd, key and eula.. if mickeysoft says i have to pay them $149 now.. then i'll be using linux - red hat is looking better all the time.

why doesnt mickeysoft work on the code for xp and fix all these damm bugs.. how about including a anti-virus, firewall, spyware and popup blocker with the os that actually works.

there lame version of giant's antispyware is pathetic.

the good news is vista inc is going to sue mickeysoft for trademark infrigement.. something mickeyosoft does over and over and over. personally, i think its time to drop the windows name and come up with something better.

Does this check the version or the actual key?

I'm using the "corporate edition" because keep changing hardware and don't want to reactivate, but I'm using my legit key.
