Microsoft bars Windows pirates

Hope it's not a repost.

"The software giant has decided that a forthcoming update to XP will not work with the most widely pirated versions of its operating system.

The upgrade, called Service Pack 2, closes security loopholes in XP and adds features that make it easier to keep machines safer from viruses."

Yo ho ho.

Besides, all SP2 is going to do is close the current vulnerabilities and open new ones. How is anyone going to be better off?

I'm sure these pirates will be able to download versions with it slipstreamed. Microsoft can't stop them so easily.

All they are doing is block a few more of the most popular pirated serials. So basically the same as when they blocked FCKWG-* in SP1.

LOL!

Microsoft = teh funnay once again!

What do they consider a "pirated" version??? The media source that most "bootleggers" use is a Open/Select License copy, combined with a Volume License Key. Unless they are planning to cut out their biggest financial contributors - big businesses who only use the volume license copies - then there's not jack shyat they can do.

If the biggest financial contributors have an employee that is stealing license codes for personal use and distributing them, then the inability to install sp2 will be brought to their attention.

MS has never been able to stop anyone from pirating anything. I can't remember the exact numbers, but do you guys remember back when you could just put all 1's (I think it was 1's) in any MS product's registration key fields and it would work?

Great fun. I dont think they will be putting the pirates out too much. AS someone said above me, it'll just close open vulnerabilities and open new ones.

i remember... I think the activation code actually had to be a multiple of 7, but it turns out that it was only 7 digits (I think), so all 1s worked fine.

isn't it FCK GW?

Hahaha, let's waste time trying to secure something in vain instead of spending time developing and fixing problems with your source code. Typical.

Eh you seem to be a little misinformed about how microsoft does their licensing. They do NOT have a single corporate license key. Each corporation gets its own key that they can use to install on all of the computers they have, microsoft makes them pay for a license for each computer in their organization CAPABLE of running windows xp. The bootleggers aren't generally using keys from legitimate corporations, its not like microsoft can't block their keys without reprocussion, its easy.

Pretty sure it's FCKGW

not that I'd know...

I'm legal and I don't plan to install SP2, so I don't see why this will bother people with pirated copies. Until some proggy requires SP2, I won't install it.

anyone who's smart knows how to get a copy of XP without pirating and without paying for it.

Just attend one of their developer conferences...they usually hand it out for free there 🙂

I  Windows XP Pro ... most stable OS in my book. My desktop has been up for 25 days but my laptop is still going strong for more than 2 months 😀
