Microsoft backs down on piracy

those who relent and buy a real copy of Windows can do so at reduced prices ? $119 for Windows Vista Home Premium, half the regular retail price.

So maybe this should go into Hot Deals! :p

Install a pirated copy of Vista and then buy a legit copy for half off!

Also, it sounds like those out there that are using the OEM Bios hack are going to be out of luck when SP1 comes out.

Now they just need to let me trade my Vista in for a copy of XP

They are assuming that a lot of people are using pirated vista since it isn't selling as well as hoped.
When are they going to figure out that the reason it isn't selling well is because it sucks?

So basically it pays to pirate vista now, even if you were going to buy it anyway.

<- running 64bit vista. It hasn't been out long enough to except widespread support. That never happens until an SP1 is released. Regardless, I haven't had any issues except shitty programs that dont support 64bit yet.

This sounds like an easy way to take people to court over piracy. I assume you would have to prove you had a pirated copy in order to get a discount. That makes it easier to prove in court, right?

Granted it takes time to adjust to, but I've been using it for a few months with and office 2007 and have zero complaints with it.

I actually do like it.

I think if you're running a pirate copy and then do any Windows Updates, Windows Genuine Advantage will detect that you have a pirated version and then start with annoying pop ups and giving you opportunity's in those pop ups to buy a legit version for half price.

Unfortunately I have a legit copy of Vista that came with my laptop, but no legit copy of XP to replace it with. I'm thinking about learning ubuntu on the christmas break.

Many people get pirated copies when buying a computer from a shady seller.

Are pirates really stupid enough to install vista instead of xp? Perhaps those that do deserve a handicap rebate.

Is it even worth Microsoft's time to go after individuals with pirated copies? Don't they prefer to go after people who distribute the copies/etc.

I don't like this at all
Sievert said Microsoft plans to offer an update for Windows Genuine Advantage that will run the piracy check regularly without the computer user initiating the process.

Personally I find Kubuntu more usable, it may make the transition easier.

Why would this need to run regularly?

ugh, i'm tired of everyone bitching about how 'crappy' vista is. you all did the same damn thing for xp. just get over it an realize within a year or two you won't have a choice anyways so get used to it. There are a few things that need to be worked out and within a year or so everyone's hardware will be up to par anyways. So what if your OS sucks up 1gb of mem, thats nothing. In a matter of no time the standard will be 4gb anyways...

Killing the BIOS hack is going to piss a LOT of people off. Granted, they're pirates, but I know a lot of people who're going to be hurtin' for certain when that SP comes out.

They'll be able to go legit by paying what is effectively a quarter of the UK's retail price.

Hey MS, your UK prices SUCK.

Really? People complained about XP? I must have missed that boat. The only real complaints I heard were about the easily-disabled new look.

Heh, most people who did the pirated version installed Vista ultimate. That's still going to be hugely expensive even at half price. But, I can't muster up too many tears for 'em.

I've heard you fog-breathers have to pay one solid gold bar minted by Jesus Christ himself for a legit copy of Vista.
