Microsoft Automatic Update problem

For some reason I keep getting the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool update repeatedly. Every time I let Windows install it, a couple of minutes later a message pops up again asking to install it. I have tried going back to the MS update page and let it scan and install but the problem still persists.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this annoying problem?

Yes, I have rebooted many times. Every time it has the icon that says it will install the update, but once rebooted I get the message about the update again.

make sure what version of Windows XP you have, and then download the tool and save it. Then try installing it not on line. Also - turn off any AV or Firewall you might be running during the installation. They can interfere.

Thanks! This seemed to work. there hasn't been any more incessant automatic updates of the tool since I followed your suggestion.
