Microsoft 360 Ring of Death repair fails.

I have this thread in off topic, they told me to ask for more info here
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2114961

My friend sent his 360 for repair for ring of death. He just got the unit back today and it worked for about an hour and then failed again.

Its the same unit, same serial number. There was nothing inside the box saying what they actually did to it. He has already called Microsoft and they are going to do the process again to get it fixed.

Is this common?

something probably got f'd up in the shipping process... UPS dropped my first 360 replacement and busted it up real good.

UPS is horrible. I got a package the other day from them that looked like it got run over and attacked by wild animals. I could literally reach inside pull out my Zune through the hole in the box.

yea when i got my 360 back from UPS in that white box, the box was hardly white anymore. it had all these marks all over it like it had been dropped from every angle imagineable.

In this case the box is in good condition. I guess he will get it repair again..

aghhh I hate seeing these threads because I know my time is coming.

You just bought yours recently, right? If it's a Zephyr (first mobo w/HDMI) or later, it should have a much better survival rate since they were made after MS was well aware of the problem.

Hmm, same thing happened to my buddy. He's on his second xbox, which sucks. I'd suggeste doing the x-clamp fix yourself, but that voids the warranty so I don't think it's totally worth it per se. But after mine RRODed, I did that fix and haven't had a SINGLE problem with my xbox, not even freezes (which hapened occasionanlly). But I also flashed my xbox so I kind of had no choice 😀

yeah it seems to always happen. My buddy got his from Ebay and it died after 5 months.
I actually sold mine on Ebay about 4 months after i got it. The buyer contacted me about two months after saying his had died. I helped get his fixed by Microsoft.

has anybody tried a laptop cooler pad on the bottom?

Personally I think the best cooling without opening it up is zip tying two 80mm fans side by side and putting them right on the backside of the 360(where the factory ones are) blowing out. I got two of them on mine and the air gets just warm. I can actually feel the fans pulling air in from the side of my xbox.

I have them hooked to their own on/off switch and power source. I was thinking about getting a intercooler or whatever its called but I ain't thrilled with 3rd party adapters. They tend to not want to fit good.

Just to update you. My friend send the unit back to Xbox again for the third time. It just came back today and still working, only been 10 minutes.

Its still his original unit fixed. he asked for a different one and they said no. meanwhile another guy at work got his exchanged the first time.

Could you post a picture of your setup? I have a 360 and haven't used it much because I'm scared it will break.

Thanks

My younger brother finally received his replacement 360 through Fedex yesterday.

It was a brand new console. With HDMI also.

Works flawless. So far 🙂

Heh, I'm on my second 360 and fourth repair service with MS. On a bright side, they sent me a free game (PGR3) for all of my troubles...of course I have no console to play it with currently (my fourth repair service is still ongoing).

I find it funny that the CSR still try to explain to me how pack the console when the box arrived and I just said "dude, I've done this before".

It's always odd reading an old thread and seeing a reply you made months ago.

Slightly more on topic, has anyone seen anything about the new revision 360s RRoDing?

There are reports of them RRODing but it is at a much less rate than the pre-Falcon versions. Estimates are at 10% or less. Which still isn't all that acceptable since the norm is around 3%.

Do you have links to that number? Just curious.

I'd have to search. I remember reading it a couple of weeks ago. Just don't remember where!

edit: Well that was an easy search

Q: How much more reliable are the current generation of Xbox 360 than the previous designs? Original Xenon, Zypher and Falcon.
I've heard that the failure rates for the current design is sub 10%. Much much better, but still too high imoh. And those designs haven't seen much life yet, so no one knows if that failure rate will hold.
