Microphone for class

Fuuny how the same words conjure up different scenarios. My initial understanding of what OP wanted was a good microphone to use in class, i.e, for speaking to students, not recording.

Make sure that you have the Prof's permission to record him, or that such permission is implicit by school policy.

Other considerations after your explanation are, distance and ambient noise. You will probably want a very directional mike that will pick up the targeted speaker and minimize the collateral noise.

Yeah, i'm looking for a directional/shotgun type mic. I just don't know what's out there. I was hoping the Apple site would have something, but theirs aren't directional. And yes, the profs don't mind. Most people use their laptop mics or digital recorder, but i'd rather use a USB mic that can record straight onto my Macbook (so i could link the specific audio with the specific lecture notes).

That USB mic from <b>skulkingghost</b> doesn't look like the type that would work well in a classroom setting. I'm not always at the front.

I'm looking to spend $150 or less (the cheaper the better of course).

You are on the right track with a uni-directional USB mike. There are several out there - most within you posted budget.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I'm still in the market for one of these. I just want something small (not like a 4" long shotgun mic) so that I can just clip it onto the screen of my Thinkpad without making it way obvious that I am recording.

My professor is about 10-50 feet away depending on where I sit, and he moves when talking so I'm not sure how well a directional mic would do. My biggest issue with the built-in mic on my Thinkpad is that it picks up all of my typing as loud clicks. The lecture hall isn't too loud, so I'm thinking an omnidirectional mic would do? Any suggestions for inexpensive (<$20) mics that would suit this use?
