Microphone doesn't work with my PC

I built two computers and tested two microphones on both of them and I can't get any sound from the Mic. I can't record any sound. Both PC's are using intergrated sound. I run the dxdiag sound test and I can only hear myself if I turn the volume way up and blow in the mic. What's the problem? Do I have to connect something inside?
 
Check your Volume Control see whether you have mute the mic or line in.

Check whether your casing got sound I/O at front panel which connected to motherboard or not.
If yes then plug your mic at front panel, if not then plug at the back.
 
Some motherboards that are mounted in cases with front mic jacks have problems. As an example if you have an integrated jack on the back the microphone may only work from the rear Jack or the front jack, but not both.
 
It works then, but low volume. You need a mic preamp, connected to the line in of the sound card, or a sound card with internal mic preamps. They amplify the microphone signal so it is at line level.
 
If it is a level problem, some sound cards have jumpers to increase the sensitiivity. On integrated sound and some other sound cards you'll find the mic sensitivity switch in the Advanced Options menu on the M$ mixer.

Some integrated sound mobos have the mic jack shared with the multispeaker option which must be turned off in order for the mic to work.
 
I'm having a problem too on a Nvidia MCP-T board.. (Shuttle SN45G)
I can only record from the front jacks, but not the back.
