Microphone acting funny

I was talking over Ventrilo the other day while playing a game and I noticed a curious problem with my microphone:

No one could hear me when I would talk EXCEPT if I went to control panel and opened up the Speech menu. While this menu was open, people could hear me fine. When i closed it, people stopped being able to hear me. I tried unplugging my mic and plugging it back in and then reconfiguring it.

Eventually I gave up and continued playing with the speech options open in the back (proving that it doesn't have to be the active window, simply has to be open)

Honestly, this doesn't make much sense to me but maybe there's some backround process that I don't know about that occurs when I open that menu. I'm sort of at a loss here.

Go to sound and audio properties and make sure the recording device selected is your sound card.

Also go to the volume controls and make sure that the mic recording device is selected, turned up and/or not muted
