Microcredit and the Poor - A Success Story

I just got done reading a book written by the CEO of Subway, Fred De Luca, called "Start Small, Finish Big". De Luca is a strong proponent of what is known as microcredit - what would seem as very small loans in the order of a few hundred dollars up to one hundred thousand dollars, to people who require such money to go into business for themselves. The book's great and mentions several huge companies that sprouted up from very small investments. In fact, Subway itself came from a $1000 loan given to De Luca from a family friend.

Anyways, there is an organization in India called the Grameen Bank which De Luca references in the book and is inspired by. I think many of us in North America should read a bit about the history of this bank. It really puts some myths (from both the political left and right) to rest. It's a shame that the governments of North America do not sponsor and/or promote such organizations here. I think it might be a great program to work in conjunction with, or as an alternative to welfare.
