microchip for pets

I took my dog in to be spayed today. When I dropped her off they asked me if I wanted them to implant a microchip during the procedure. I said I'd think about it and they gave me a brochure to look at the details. If its ever lost they can identify your dog at other vets/shelters. When you report your dog missing the company apparently has a notification system that notifies local vets/shelters and "rescuers". It also alerts the vets about any medical issues the pet may have. Anyway, this isnt an Ad, I just wanted to know if anyone has done this and actually had it used?

BTW, the cost was 40 something dollars for the microchip and 15.00/year annual fee.

Yea all my dogs are microchiped... I think it really helps for those just in case situations. I've worked at vet clinics for the past 4 years as well and when a stray comes in that's brought to us from animal patrol, we immediately check if it has a chip and when it does are able to contact the owners. We've returned a bunch of dogs that way :), while others not microchiped I've seen never returned to their owners :(.

Mine came from the pound with a chip. I paid some one time registration fee to attach my name/address to the chip code.

My dog is chipped.

We found a dog near our house just before christmas - no collar, but he was friendly, so we took him to the shelter. Turns out he had the chip too - someone's family dog and they got him back on christmas day.

It's a good idea, for the reasons Dogo mentioned. Recurring fees are BS though, I don't have to pay any sort of ongoing fee.

I paid like $15 to the Vet to implant the chip and paid a one time fee like $25 to register the chip with Home Again. I've moved a few times and been able to go online to update my address.

For the money, I recommend it. I came across a lost dog on the beach with no collar. Brought it to the local pound, the first thing they did was scan her for a chip. After a week, waiting for the owner to claim her, she was adopted out.

Our dog is chipped and most places like Humane Societies chip all their animals now.

There should be no need for an annual fee. My cats both have one. It's pretty painless.

Both of my dogs are tattooed with numbers and my youngest dog has a chip (one-time fee as part of adoption price).

It's definitely worth it if you feel your dogs could ever get away from you.

it looks like the fee is for the website features. Medical Info of the pet on their website. 24/7 vet info/care 1800 number. Pet ID cards. LOST pet posters you can create and distribute. The company is HomeAgain as someone above mentioned.
