Microcenter SSD

Anybody try one of these new 120GB Microcenter drives? The price definitely seems right on them. The older Microcenter branded drives used Sandforce, but this says BGA 324 for the controller, with 2GB DDR3 cache. The only thing I can find is a similar controller in the cheap Patriot Torqx drives, but way more cache and much better speeds. Can't find it's sister drive, like the older Microcenter branded drives were just rebranded ADATA. Was thinking about grabbing one and seeing how they stack up.

I was at Micro Center last week picking parts for a build. they had the Samsung 840 120gb ssd for the same price, for the money I'd say that's a safer pick

No more adatas for me
My first cheap MC ssd died while opening crystal disk info and crashed my i7-930.
That ADATA S599 55gb sf drive spent a year + as a boot drive.
It was replaced with a m4 and then used it with a few games non stop for another year without ever having a problem I believe it had over 12000 hrs on it not bad.
That drive always had 40% free space and only wrote 10-24mb game saves a day.
Going to replace it with a non pro 840 ror 94 at egg.

I have a new BP4 from MyDigitalSSD (2.5" too), review should be up later this week. I suspect the Microcenter SSD is very similar to it as it seems to be based on the same firmware given the extra OP.

i can grab one for you and do some testing if you want to confirm for your review? i'm an ssd whore. i was going to grab one for a new lower-end build for my parents anyway.

my main machine is x79 based with a 3960x, so i shouldn't have any bottlenecks

Well then I would have to say "go for it" get one and test it. You are "that guy" 🙂. And please post some stats on it if you would. I went into the local MC here in the Twin Cities and saw the Ssd in the glass counter. A week before they had none. Was considering one for my older lappy and it just might be the ticket.

It's your call but would be great if you could. It looks like an interesting drive and the price isn't too bad.

i upgraded my samsung 830 to an 840 pro just because it was the latest thing
Do you actually see any difference in daily use? 830 is already one of the fastest ssd around.

My crucial m4, not known to be one of the fastest, still boots under 10s and apps open instantaneously. What's faster than instantanious? 😎

super instantaneous is faster!

i just upgrade for the sake of upgrading. i usually get them free for testing or samples, so why not? 🙂

i grabbed a couple microcenter drives 2 days ago, but just got rolled by a snow storm so i didn't trust my power long enough to do anything. i DID take some pics of them.... but they're not uploaded and i'm way too lazy! sent them to hellhamer. 🙂

I got a asrock xtream mobo, FX6100 , Samsung 840 120gb, and a cheapo keyboard and new sata DVD burner...279$ out the door. Apparently they are knocking 20$ off any SSD with certain bundled parts.

Did you send them to me via private message or through some other way? Just wondering because I don't have any new PMs. Or did you mean that you've been too lazy to send them?

i sent an email to the address in your profile! i was too lazy to upload them somewhere. email is easy 😛

Oh, you probably used the now-deleted Hotmail account I had in my profile then 😛 Could you resend the mail to my AT email (kristian@anandtech.com)?

Not to Bad. Way better then their earlier 64GB Ssd's...............not to mention that I have 2 BTW.........1 in lappy but needing a bit more space and that's why I am curious about this new 120GB. Thanks for the Bench! I think will pick one up for my ol' laptop. 🙂
