Because they have rights.
You can't make a prisoner work. It is unfair to put them in the hot sun. It is unfair not to feed them full course meals. Unfair to not provide them with air conditioning and cable tv. Unfair to not provide them medical care better than those not in prison.

Some places have tried it the old way, and they are getting hit with all sorts of lawsuits.

It was discussed earlier in this thread that the cost to make a prison more self sufficient might actually result in a larger bill than we are paying today. Things just are not the way they used to be and that goes way beyond lawsuits, prisoner rights, and unions.

The folks agreeing with letting out criminals early are the same folks who bitch when an ex-prisoner commits another, more heinous, crime soon after release.

They just need to put this guy in charge.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!! He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. You have to love this guy!!
More on the AZ Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:
About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to
their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is
not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and
they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes... so shut your damned mouths."

Some of that stuff takes it a little to far imo, but I would probably be perfectly fine with a lot of it.

Yep. They get on their soapboxes when a crime is committed but when they realize that they are personally paying for prisons, its a different story.

I just fail to see the logic. What jobs that are out there are being fought over by overqualified people as it is. There is very little chance of these people becoming employed anytime soon. So not only are we going to have more criminals running the streets, we are still going to be paying for them.

There was the story about a judge who paroled some rapist, who proceeded to rape the judge's daughter. Things change when its your ass on the line.

*chain email cut*

Of course it neglects to mention that the county has paid out more than $43 million dollars in settlements for abuse, dead inmates, etc. while that guy has been in charge. In addition, according to wiki there are more than $50 million more in pending lawsuits against the country for abuse and violation of constitutional rights.

So, you might not be saving as much money as you think.

No, Joe Arpaio needs to be thrown from office. He's a worthless piece of human garbage.

He must be doing something right.
They just gave him $1.6 million to expand the tents to hold illegal immigrants.

I don't see the moral problem with making prisoners work to provide services for the prison population itself. When you use them to do outside projects, you deprive hardworking citizens of the chance to make a living in those fields (such as road work, etc.). Part of their being in prison is to repay their debt to society, not do bide their time idly. Make them work, but give them a bit of an incentive (like mentioned above). Growing their own food is a good idea as it also teaches them a skill/trade if done properly. Land near prisons (which are usually in rural areas) is insanely cheap anyway, so that isn't much of a problem in a lot of cases.

Or Arizona is full of complete idiots. Bunch of old white people scared of brown people, they keep giving Sheriff Joe piles of money to chase after immigrants while Joe ignores actual crimes.

Richard Post

Richard Post was a paraplegic inmate arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and criminal trespass. Post was placed in a restraint chair by guards and his neck was broken in the process. The event, caught on video, shows guards smiling and laughing while Post is being injured. Because of his injuries, Post has lost much of the use of his arms.[59] Post settled his claims against the Sheriff's office for $800,000.

Nice to see you support people like him.

And the same folks who bitch about criminals being let out early are same folks who don't want to pay more taxes to build a prison to put them in.;)

I like how the people for the people by the people act in our best interest. In this case I agree. Let them out early. Hell don't even put them in prison . I see little differance between the criminals and the people creating and enforcing the laws. As far as the Academics and got us to were we are at. You be the judge . Howed they do? THey Suck. Now they want us to follow them into the bottomless pit even further. Some laws are so retarded. Law CAN and does create Disorder. I am not educated like most here. So if I can see this . Than I know they can also. Its by design. Why ? Thats one dam good question.

Yeah lets lock people up for 2 years for smoking a joint or stealing an ipod. What a waste of money.

including Michael Phelps, now a criminal in the state of South Carolina.

maybe they'll find him a pool with a jail attached.

if it's an 18 yard pool, he'll go nuts doing kick-turns.

needs at least a 25 yard pool.
