Michigan is one of just four states to spend more money on prisons than higher education, according to a new report.

The study, released Thursday, estimated that Michigan spent $1.19 on corrections for every $1 spent on public universities and community colleges last fiscal year. Only Vermont's ratio was higher. Minnesota had the lowest ratio, spending 17 cents on prisons for every $1 on higher education.

Forty-five states spent more on higher education than prisons. One state spent the same amount, according to the Pew Center on the States.

Michigan is in the top 3rd in terms of income and sales taxes. Unfortunately, they have a very high corporate tax (49th worse) which has resulted in chasing businesses out of state - link

That is completely untrue about the corporate tax. There was a huge uproar last year in Michigan over business taxes and some tried claiming that taxes were excessivly high until real data showed that Michigan was in the lower half of overall business taxes compared to other stats.

Sales tax is 6%, definitely not among the highest.

Income taxes are about average as well.

But this is all irrelevant to the topic anyways, which is about how we ALLOCATE the money, and Michigan, like many other states, makes many wrong decisions when it comes to that. We passed the stupid 3 strikes law for drug offenders, so we're spending a fortune locking up people that need treatment, not prison.

Yeah, this place sucks. I've lived here all of my life. But I'm out of here in a few months.

Okay, so why did we elect Granholm for a second term??

Because she's less evil than the opponent she was running against?
The exact same reason why Rod Blagojevich was re-elected in Illinois.

That's income, sales and property. I'm talking mostly about corporate and small business taxes. Those have been chasing jobs out of the state.

Chase jobs out state = high unemployment + people leaving. Less jobs means it is harder on the lower to middle class people who either can't or won't leave the state which results in more crime.
