Michigan GOP to revoke ALL teacher licenses if they strike

Poor leadership in the past has put our state at this crossroad, so why you feel its necessary to attack the current Governor and the State Senate/House is puzzling.

I fully support our governor on this. The last illegal teachers strike in Detroit lacked any ramifications. Don't get me wrong, I do hope that the NMEA member vote does NOT approve a strike. That would be bad for everybody. But, if the strike is approved, those that opt to participate should have to deal with meaningful consequences of breaking the law.

I am so glad i graduated Detroit public schools a long, long time ago when it was decent. sounds more like a scare tactic than anything. no way they can let go of 155,000+ teachers. remove all Republican'ts from office now!

Which is better, all the teachers going on strike or all of them being fired. The end result is the same...the kids lose.

They're losing now - big time. With the teachers working.

Teachers, above everyone else should be able to comprehend that the school system and the state are broke. They, above everyone else should be smart enough to realize that it's time for the same type of concessions that many before them have had to make, including many, many union members in the state. Their situation is far from unique.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

I dont disagree either. Teachers also should stand up against bad teachers and stupid admin, but they dont do much of that either.

I wonder who they'll find to teach in Detroit once the Detroit teachers have lost their licenses. Who will they find to come into drug-infested, crime-filled neighborhoods and teach overcrowded classrooms full of unruly students whose parents are providing them with little support?

I think teachers are receiving far too much blame for factors beyond their control, such as their students being born into poverty, having students with below average IQs, and parents that will not or do not have the ability to raise their children properly.

I really dont buy much of that. I wont argue that it is harder on some urban areas, but the main problem many of those school are just flat broken. Those schools need to be shut down or fixed.

Agreed. If the schools are so broken that no teachers will come, then that area just won't have schools. We need to get past this idea that every child in America is "entitled" to basic education. If their parents were doing a better job of parenting, their schools would be getting closed down.

OR maybe if poor parents had a choice, they would not be sending their kids to broken schools. Given the number of parents that line up for lotterys to have their kids accepted into a better school, I think the answer becomes fairly obvious.

Hell yeah, fuck the kids. It's their own fault for being born into a shitty family.

If they wanted an education they should have been born into a rich family.

Stupid kids with their entitlement mentality.

It's their parents fault for bringing kids into their shitty reality. I don't blame the kids (too much) but I don't feel a lot of sympathy for them either. Most of the world exists with a stark contrast between haves and have nots. We've managed to stave off that eventuality for a while here in the United States. Maybe it's time that places like Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, etc. just be allowed to fall into lawless, uncontrolled ghettos. With the rise of globalization, we're being equalized with every other country in the world. Personally, I'd rather condemn some to be have nots rather than risk being one myself.

Ummm... States and municipalities have a legal duty to provide schooling. They can't just say "Fuck it" and walk away.

Local parents will come in, and teach to the best of their ability, and earn a salary.

They have not been allowed to succeed on any level before, and maybe now they can succeed at teaching their kids.

I don't know where you are getting all this, but we are talking about the City of Detroit.

And pretty much every kid there is born a good kid.

So, it's not the people's fault.

You might look to the fact that our Government is Trillions of Dollars in Debt, and Insurance Companies force Medical Coverage out of this World, and that Lawyers are suing everyone in sight.

Detroit is not a problem, it's a symptom.

The answer is only obvious in that case if you don't consider the problems of scale. Admission lotteries, vouchers and all "choice" based plans only ever work because of the relatively small numbers of kids involved compared to the overall school population. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but there simply aren't enough spots in good school to accept any reasonable percentage of kids from bad school districts. It's a lifeboat for a few, not a solution to the problem.

I would say that's an easy position to take for people who have the happy accident of being born into the "right" social class.

I will also say that I'm not sure society is so easily split up like that. That we can just say "screw the poor" and expect it to have zero impact on the lives of those of us NOT in that category.

Just train the kids to flip burgers or half ass paperwork in a cubicle at age 3, who needs school and thinking? Capitalism needs obedient workers, not some dreamer wasting the bosses time.
