Michigan GOP strips jobless workers of Medicaid

If you're in Michigan, don't lose your job if you have any health issues. GOP controlled senate rammed through a bill to put new strict requirements on Medicaid recipients. They have to work a minimum of 29 hours a week to qualify. They also refused any exemptions for people such as veterans, seasonal employees, women who experience miscarriage, require it to be discontinued if it didn't lead to cost-savings, exempt people serving as primary care givers for elderly relatives. etc...

This is how one of the GOP senators put it.

“The best safety net ever created by God is family. I'm not sure that government is supposed to supplement that process."

This was made possible by new rules from the federal government. Previously requirements like this would not have been permissible. More than half of Michigan Medicaid enrollees are employed or were students. The majority of those who didn't work had barriers such as age and poor health.

The sponsor of the bill made a comment basically along the lines that it is a safety net program so it will have holes in it.

Now the question is, will they be rewarded by voters in November.

Maybe some other generous blue state folks should buy them tickets to move to their state where their Medicaid can be resumed.

The poor must suffer before the wealthy spends a single penny that does not benefit themselves.

Look to where the donor class wants to pull the nation: Right into their complete and utter control despite the fact that we the people have the power of the vote to prevent that from happening.

Pitiful really.

How any resident of Michigan can vote GOP astonishes me. The whole thing with Flint's water being poisoned by the short-sighted, penny pinching "fixes" imposed by a GOP monitor who super-ceded local elected officials should have been warning enough.

BTW Michigan's governor just cut off bottled water for Flint. It's been long enough in his opinion-even though the work to remedy the damage he caused is only half done (they can't lay new pipe in the winter there).

I wouldn't be surprised if this bill had little impact.
Able bodied people, where they are both mentally and physically able to work tend to look for work and find work.

I did skim the bill a bit but it appears to be written in away where the only people who could be impacted are the imaginary boogeyman that GOP'ers like to pretend exist.
It will probably create more administrative overhead than save money by kicking boogeymen off medicaid.

What's most cowardly about Republicans is their tendency to institute hateful policies in a very passive-aggressive way.

They desperately want to eliminate all government health care programs, but because they know they would never get elected again if they actually cut the programs, they implement all kinds of conditions that just make it very difficult to qualify.

They really want to ban all abortions with no exceptions, but because they know they would lose elections, they try to ban as much of it as they can without technically violating Roe v. Wade.

And of course, the Trump camp desperately wants to ban all Muslim immigrants (and let's be honest, they would make Islam illegal if they could), but implemented its current half-hearted ban because it knew a ban that reflected Trump's campaign promise would be instantly denied by all good courts.

So basically if someone gets cancer they should just be left to die, right? Many (probably most) people can't maintain 29 hours a week while being treated for cancer.

what a shit hole why are republicans such dicks?

In their minds they are saving people from the oppressive government whose evil taxes would steal away their mythical bootstraps. Republican economic policy is bootstraps for everybody! They're not dicks, they're heroes!

We need to address the underlying cause of the delusion.

I dont think they need to. The GOP will be kicked out on control next cycle with this type of policy. Hit the conservatards where it hurts and they may wise up.

Michigan has a duty to its citizens and it would be immoral to allow them to offload that duty to other, more responsible governments.

Its the same state "adding millions to roads" by taking from the general fund which is going to hit educational spending. We've been here less than a year but its like Kansas 10 years in the future. Fucked schools, fucked roads and no desire to ask people to pay for anything. In fact they passed a $15 per person per year tax cut over and above what was needed to fix the state tax code which was hit by the federal tax cut.

So, is that your goal? To make everyone leave your area? Michigan, poisons their own water, runs their industries into the ground, bankrupts itself (and others), lets monsters like Nassar have free reign, and now kicks people that are most vulnerable off of aid.

You're a fiscal conservative, right? Why don't you live up to your tough talk and just go around putting bullets in peoples' heads, after all that'll save tons of money (and based on your posts you're basically guaranteed to have said such at some point). Plus you can get your gun fetish on at the same time. Are you too chickenshit or just want to keep trying to believe you're not being evil?

I wouldn't exactly call it passive, they're just being passive aggressive when called out on it, by making up people to claim they're going after (like "welfare queens") in order to get those who are exactly the people they are targeting (when you hear them being honest about it) to support them. Americans especially are prone to delusions (I know shitloads of poor people that constantly rant about poor people, because they've been able to delude themselves into believing they're not the same or they're the exception or various other illogical rationalizations to work against not only other people but themselves as well).

Except they are cutting the programs. They were openly bragging about fucking over their own constituents by sabotaging the ACA. They're not even trying to hide it (until their constituents started showing up and demanding they answer, which came about 5 fucking years too late), and then they literally just lied out their asses or ran or didn't show up/cancelled after it became clear that it was just going to be pissed off people demanding answers.

They've been trying to do that too. The problem is they weren't only not losing elections over that, it is actually one of the things they've been able to exploit and get single-issue voters to support them even when they fuck them over every other which way they can. They've been pretty open that they're just trying to game the system in their favor to overturn Roe v Wade. They're not even trying to hide that any more. That was a major reason why people that were utterly disgusted by Turmp still voted for him because they saw an opportunity to make progress on that. They don't give a shit if they burn the whole country down to achieve it either. And the fucking dumbest part of all is how many Republicans are of the mind that poor people should not be allowed to procreate.

Absolutely they know that all the shit they're clamoring for and promising their constituents would get tossed by courts (even conservative leaning ones that have anything resembling integrity, as they consistently have), which is why they're trying to game the courts into being partisan system that supports them. That's also why they're more than happy to keep throwing obviously blatantly illegal laws at the state level as they're actively looking for holes they can exploit then.
