This decision is for Apple alone to make. If they think they can make it by selling overpriced gizmos (hardware) they will continue in the same way they've been doing for years.
OTOH, if they realize money can be made by selling OS to be installed on other's people hardware, they can easily strike good deals with Dell, HP, BenQ, whoever...

If Jobs allowed them to sell macs, I think it would be that much harder politically to adopt amd's. It would not only be a concern to intel, but now a concern to apple as well.

If it happens it's the end of Apple hardware.
Apple has always been a hardware company and I doubt they will do good by selling OSX alone.

not a bad idea for dell to consider. but jobs wants to keep the market under his grasp, and understandably so. i wouldn't sell apple to PC makers if i was in his shoes.

Not if Dell and Apple come to a profitable arrangement. Apple can keep the truly "premium" hardware and Dell can handle the iMac and Mac mini type stuff. Also, Dell servers are far more widely used than Apple's gear - there's an opportunity for OS X Server there.

Time for the lame "Apple is a hardware company" comments.

Apple hasn't been a hardware company for a long time.

They still sell hardware. They still get a substantiall percentage of their revenue from it. If Dell had the freedom to put osx on any of their machines and charge whatever they wanted for it, it would kill apples still operating hardware division.

If it's reasonably priced (in line with Dell's Windows XP machines) I'll buy one.

The chances are low because Apple is like many other "high end" products. They control all aspects of their final product to ensure the experience is what they want.

Allowing clones to be made again would detract from that ability. It would require Apple to police each vendor to make sure they are producing machines that meet their 'image and usability' and not adding (crappy) bundled software.

Apple isn't going to go out of busness just catering to the 3% user base it has, nor is BMW going to die because it only sells to a small portion of the car buying market. Thus, why license OS X out to increase their market share?
