America, for the most part, does not love critically-acclaimed films. We like entertainment. Some studios and directors are starting to say it publicly, too, screw the critics, we can sell tickets making people laugh/sit on the edge of their seats.

I realize it might be a bad example among the ATOT "sophisticated" but when Eddie Murphy made Norbit, he basically laughed at the critics, who universally slammed the movie, and ended up making $30+M in the opening weekend.

Same with Michael Bay. The reason he still has work is because people like his movies and continue to see them, whether or not anyone here wants to admit that. Anyone who wants to criticize that is kidding themselves. Congratulations on your taste in films, but it proves you have no idea what makes money. Last I checked, that's what matters. Want art? Fine, but most people don't care.

I'll agree with you there, America does not want to be intellectually engaged in the movie theater, that is for sure.

Possibly because it is ENTERTAINMENT?

Before pissing all over the American general public for their taste in films you should look at how well most of them do overseas or glance at the Bollywood fare (not exactly Citizen Cain every time).

You misunderstand. I'm not pissing all over the American general public for their taste in films. I'm pissing all over them on general principle, because the majority are mostly useless wastes of existence. It's really more the general retardedness that concerns me. Refer to Idiocracy.

And this kind of thing is actually sort of the trend I'm talking about. Since when was intellectual engagement mutually exclusive from entertainment? I still love Tetris.

So, anyway, if you're still mad, wa-waaaaaah.....

oh the smug is obvious with this one...

don't think you people who aren't Americans are free of the same problems. It's a humanity thing. We all suck. Most of Europe makes this obviously evident, but yet they still think they are better than Americans. We're simply more diverse, so we have that to blame. I don't want to live in a European country, that's for damn sure. You're only better than the rednecks, and sometimes that's a stretch.

"Virus with shoes" I think is how Hicks put it...

Edit: And just so's no one's under any misconceptions, I am very much a resident and citizen of the United States.

And before anyone gets confused about this and it wanders into some form of nationality/morality debate, let me just make clear my political affiliation.

So in the end, it's not so much about who's better than who as it's about fuck everybody.

Michael Bay is the movie version of Kiss. Here's why:

Stuff blows up, people shout sophomoric stuff and make extreme facial expressions, loud music plays, more stuff blows up, everything is very melodramatic, more loud music plays, the lead guy puts his arms up in a triumphant Christ-like gesture (has there EVER been a Michael Bay movie or Kiss concert that doesn't use this scene?), one last explosion with rock music, and you leave with a grin on your face.

It's a cheap formula, but if you just suspend disbelief and go along with it, it kinda works.

I also love how the soundtrack for "The Rock" has been used in practically every action thriller trailer ever since that movie came out. It's just become synonymous with action, like the 2001 themes are with sci-fi.

"Talent" is debatable.

"Money" and "Doesn't Give a Shitism", most definitely is not.

He's an action director. I enjoy most of his movies because I know going in I'm just going to see an action flick and he usually pulls it off well enough to keep me entertained.

So, you are just another elitist/coffee shop intellectual that loves to sneer down at how stupid you think everybody else is.

I know your breed pretty well unfortunately.

Nope, you're still missing it, which is actually kind of scary since I was so blatant about it before. If you want to talk about stupid, discerning personality traits through anonymous internet "discourse" devoid of emotion, body language, or other distinguishing characteristics of communication has to be pretty high on the list. But then, I forgot - everyone who disagrees with anyone is wrong on the internet, and you automatically know why in addition to that persons entire psychological profile.

Let me spell it out in no uncertain terms:

I'm baiting you, because I can.

I'm also kind of confused as to when it became a bad thing for someone to be elite or intellectual, but then I guess if you're on the shit end of the stick (i.e. stupid) and you don't want to admit that to yourself, you have to blame some group for something. Supposedly this is why low-income whites are the group most hostile to blacks, but that's probably not true, because I read it an intellectual book somewhere.

I enjoyed #s 8, 7, and 2. I thought #s 1 and 4 were watchable entertainment. Didn't see #s 3, 5, 6, or 9-12. Looks like #12 may deserve study in the future.

That's a decent track record for entertainment in my book.

Why would they change the spelling of a proper noun, the name of a place, for foreign audiences? I never understood that.

Yes I know harbour is an alternate spelling for harbor, but it's still a name...

i've watched enough european film to see much of their film is garbage as well, even the critically praised stuff which tends to be pretentious nonsense. just because you think you are smart doesn't mean much really.
