HAMTRAMCK, Mich. - The City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday night to a mosque's plans to send out a call to prayer to Muslims on a loudspeaker.

The Bangladeshi al-Islah mosque wants to air the Arabic call to prayer via loudspeakers five times a day, but agreed Tuesday not to air the calls before 6 a.m. or after 10 p.m.


The council indicated it would give the plan final approval next week.


Some Muslims say the call is the equivalent of church bells. Opponents argued that church bells have no religious significance and that allowing the Arabic call, which lasts less than two minutes, unfairly elevates Islam above other religions.

While I'm not fond of church bells either, they're a hell of a lot better than those prayer calls. Those things rank right up there with fingernails on the chalkboard.

Great, while they're kneeling at 7 AM they make nice speed-bump looking objects. You get 100 points if you hit the second guy while the first guy is still rolling over your trunk.

I live next door to a church and get 10 min. of church bells at noon and at 5pm every day in addition to the 30 min. of church bells every sunday at noon. It's annoying as hell. I would rather have two minutes of a call to prayer than the 10 min of bells i get now.

You cant make an omelet without breaking some eggs. And the "omelet" in this case is me being able to sleep in on the weekends, so I'm willing to break a LOT of eggs.
