Mice or rats in the attic. Poison or traps?

I have critters in the attic. I found and old ATOT thread here . They talk about the sticky traps there for mice. Will a sticky trap work on a roof rat or other large rat? Also, how do you reply to an archived thread? I don't see a reply link anywhere in the thread?

Traps if at all possible. The last thing you want is to poison a few and have them die in the walls somewhere to stink up your house for the next 5 years.
