This pc is not mine but rather someone else's pc that I agreed to take a look at.
This pc is an Athlon 1600+ on a MSI mobo (KVT 266?) with 768mb RAM and two WD HDD.
My friend recently installed windows XP on his machine. Everything worked swell for a while. Then one day, while booting up, he gets an error - C:/windows/system files not found (something to that effect)
He tried to do a repair using his XP CD but discovered that his keyboard was not responding (press any key to boot from CD) He swapped another keyboard in but same thing happen. The odd thing was that he can use his keyboard to navigate around the bios - it is after the bios startup screen ends that he has trouble. The keyboard seems to die right after the bios setup ends. He tried resetting his mobo several times and tested to make sure every keyboard he tried with the broken machine worked with another pc.
I tried all of his troubleshooting steps and can confirm the result. It seems like a bad mobo but why would it recognize the keyboard in the bios (I can use it to navigate and I can turn cap lock lights on) but not after? We tried at least 5 USB and ps/2 wireless and wired keyboards and mice.
I can't even reinstall Windows for him as we cannot press a key to boot from CD drive or from my XP boot disks.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading.
