My copy of MGS 4 came today and I have some questions.

I'm confused about saving. It appears that there's an option to save anywhere but i thought I read in the manual that it only saves to a checkpoint, you lose all items after the checkpoint. But then what is the purpose of saving anywhere? can anyone explain how saves work in this game?

why do the Gekkos sound like cows?

Anything else I should know while playing?

The save anywhere only saves up to the previous checkpoint. It basically allowing you to have multiple save files.

The Gekko's sound like cows because the sound of a Cow is supposed to be soothing. Its basically a form of psychological warfare when something that sounds like a cow crushes you underneath its feet.

Make sure during the cutscenes on the plane to drive the robot around and run it into other characters; you'll get bonus masks you can use after you beat Laughing Octopus, as well as spare batteries for the solid eye, it extends the battery life making it a lot less of a pain to keep active. It also makes the forced stealth section later on a lot easier when you use certain of the masks. Also, tranq the bosses instead of killing them; you'll get more masks for it (also when you fight a lot of FROG soldiers early in the game, tranq them as well and search the room(s)); after their armor breaks when fighting the bosses, before finishing them off (again with tranqs) search the room for a statue; when you collect 4 or 5 statues (again, one from the frog soldiers fight) you get a special solar-powered gun.

Definitely not going to get 0 alerts on my game, lol.

Shortly after I met Drebin, I found a spot where I can collect tons of guns to sell to him and get tons of ammo for myself. basically you come to a section of street where the militia and the PMC are fighting. the militia guys keep dying and then more spawn. This happens non-stop. I also found a militia disguise so i can walk amongst them without them attacking me. so i just go in and pick up the guns and ammo, shake the bodies for more rations and ammo, and i get points for Drebin's shop.

now i stupidly tried to shoot one of the pmc guys and i had my gun scoped in. just as i pulled the trigger a militia dude walks right into the crosshairs of my scope and i headshot him. then the militia turns against me. now i have to reload my last save so they don't hate me...

I played the 1st one on NES but never finished it. I finished the 1st one on PS1, and the 1st one on PS2. I played but never finished the 2nd one on PS2. If there were any after that and before 4, i haven't played those.

WTF did you just say?

I think you meant to say:

I played Metal Gear, but never finished it. I finished MGS and MGS2. I played but never finished MGS3. If there were any after that and before 4, i haven't played those.

Damn, this game is good! One of the best games I have played in awhile. I'm on Act 5 now. Even though I don't remember much of the previous MGS games, and never finished the one prior to this, the story is pretty damn awesome! I'm already wanting to play through again so I can find/do stuff I missed the 1st time.

I read everything I could on Wikipedia about the whole MGS storyline (yes, I have played the games) before playing MGS4. Despite that, there are so many things to try to remember, connect with other parts of the story, etc. Still loved it, though.

Haha, I spent almost the entire game having Snake crawling on the ground

I think in general, MGS4 does a pretty good job in terms of hinting/giving small details about previous MGS games so that you araen't completely lost. I also think that there is a database on the disc (or maybe a free DLC) that lets you check out the MGS timeline/storyline. Pretty cool stuff.

Don't miss the MGS4 Integral Podcast either. It's a podcast that can only be downloaded and listened to in-game. It has some secrets to show off in certain areas of the game as well as behind the scenes info (they have Konami / Kojima staff as guests). Pretty neat, but I think I only listened to the first three (I haven't played MGS4 since then).

weird. after finishing the game last night, i felt ready to play through again right away. tried to play though on a harder difficulty and I'm not really into so much now. I keep screwing up and getting alerts too (trying to get no alerts) but i don't think I can do it. The game was an amazing ride and extremely fun (and frustrating at certain points) but I don't get why I'm not into it now all of a sudden.

I have to say though that I am this way with a lot of games. I rarely replay a game after I beat it (single player). Maybe I just need a break from it for a bit and come back later.

I wish there were more games that kept my interest so well. a steady supply would be great.

For me, MGS is an on again off again thing. Sometimes I just feel the urge to play it, but it does take a while to come back.
