Most would be surprised at how much HD video can compress while still looking very good. You can easily fit two (yes, two) full length 720p movies on a dual layer DVD with excellent quality and full 5.1 sound. Not quite blu-ray but most people wouldnt care or even notice. I dont know how much total movie length is in MGS4, but they could almost certainly squeeze it into 2-3 discs.

Sure, you can fit two 90-min movies with some compression on a DVD, but it's usually in a format that a DVD player and common consumer would never be able to use (let alone figure out how to use). One compressed 720p movie converted to standard DVD format in 480p on a DL disc will look about the same as standard DVD quality. That's about the only usable form of 720p + DVD you'll ever get...and in that case, might as well just get either the actual DVD or Blu-Ray version.

That, and I could tell a big difference between compressed 720p and 1080p straight from, say, Blu-Ray.

Oh...and MGS4 has hours worth of video. Probably closer to 3-5 movies, to be honest (depending on the movie). A quick Google search got me someone saying "around 9 hours". That sounds...about right, actually.

But, then again, I thought the videos were all done with the in-game engine. That would take up much less space.

Also, remember that some PS3 developers are double and triple striping data across the BD50 disc to make up for the slow BD drive. MGS4 has a nice 7.1 PCM soundtrack. A ton of data can be saved by using the 360-standard 5.1 DD soundtrack.

It really wouldn't matter to me at all if MGS4 was multi platform. But believe it or not, I think it is wishful thinking. But to each his own.

? Why would it need to be a standard DVD format if its going to be in game? I'm not sure what your point is.

I thought so too. If thats the case, they could probably squeeze it into one disc.

They are done with the game engine, but are recorded as videos. Notice how smooth the framerate is, as compared to the game where, while smooth, presents an obvious difference.

They have a video for every combination of camo, costume, and face paint?

Is all of that actually rendered the same in videos? I never paid attention, and have always stuck with the digital suit.
Maybe they aren't videos, but they sure play very smooth... maybe only some are actually movies while the shorter ones in the middle of a scene are done in real time.

I might be wrong, but I had figured from the cutscene performance that they were in fact video files.

Because for some reason my brain was only registering DVD as the movie DVD. I, for some reason, wasn't connecting what you said with games on DVDs. 😕

Hm, yeah, that makes sense now.

Yes, it is actually rendered in real time. So if you had a different camo on then it would show up in a cutscene and you can waggle your controller to see it revert back to normal.

Just in case it does come to the 360, is it worth bothering with if you played and liked MGS1 but missed out on 2 and 3?

Yeah, it still is. But 2 and 3 contained a LOT of story that is mentioned in MGS4

Are you kidding? 3 is the best one out of them all. 2 is decent, but the storyline gets pretty convoluted and silly.
