There was a class action suit filed against MGM because DVDs they were selling marked "widescreen edition" were actually just pan & scan with the top and bottom cropped off.

Class Members who submit timely and valid Claim Forms may exchange each Eligible DVD for (i) a new MGM DVD from a list of 325 titles or (ii) $7.10. To request a Claim Form, call 1-800-285-2168 (toll free)

I was never aware of this, and can't understand why they would do such a thing. I bought Hoodlum about 4 years ago, and it looked to be in the correct aspect ratio?

Okay, I'm not nuts. I was thinking MGM = James Bond, and I know that I saw several of the newer Brosnan ones that were widescreen. Actual widescreen.

But, how would you know? Unless you've got the original theatrical print to compare it against.

The whole point is that they are cropping the P&S prints to the "proper" widescreen ratio by cutting even more off.

I can count the amount of DVDs I own on 2 hands... thankfully.

EDIT>> OMG Youngblood is there. :(

The phone message says the valid period is between '98 and '03 for purchases. Why is this ? I can't imagine they "fixed" this issue after that... and it would only make sense if it went against the production date. I bought Youngblood late 2004... but it was produced way before that.

I'm jsut wondering... where is the proof that the original was actually shot in 16:9 aspect ratio? did the full screen version actually show more?

Or have seen the Pan & Scan broadcast on TV. And yeah, I know what the point is. I'm an OARN (Original Aspect Ratio Nazi) - it's part of the qualifying exam. :p

wonder if thats the original, non-anamorphic release of princess bride they are referring to, or the special edition (which came out 9/4/2001). or is it both?

also, no big deal on spaceballs for me. i was planning to double dip anyways :D

They are not Pan & Scan ...

They are true widescreen matted versions of films shot in open matte

The lawsuit is rediculous and is solely based on MGM's little graphic of how widescreen works
on the back of their DVD boxes (showing more picture for widescreen, but that only
works in movies that have been pan & scanned, which these have not)

Example

God damn that's bad. And yes, the quality loss from enlarging applies, because you're scrapping a lot of pixels. Looking at it again, I doubt that this would go this long unnoticed. :p
