Metro2033 my analysis

What a steaming pile of crap this game is. Very dark, hard to see anywhere, the lead guy keeps walking off and muttering something and you are left with trying to figure out what to do. Scores of monsters rush you where you can unload an entire clip into one and it wont die and while you are reloading, 3-4 of the others maul you to bits.

Graphics are nice, but they try too hard. The whole experience is a big fat "D" in my book due to gameplay, creatures, and overall experience.

I'd be pissed if I spent $5.00 on this game, let alone "normal" prices that you can find it for on Steam or otherwise. I've given it a solid 3-4 hours so far and just can't stand it anymore.

Funny, I thought the game was pretty damn good. It was very atmospheric, gave a good sense of having to conserve supplies whenever possible. The crossbow is the best weapon in the game since you can retrieve your ammo, it is silent, and is deadly as hell.

The weapons act just like you would expect from homemade weapons or weapons that are extremely old and don't have the best care. If you put yourself in the situation instead of just treating the game as another run of the mill FPS the game shines.

I like the atmosphere and background of Metro2033, so I might be willing to grudgingly give it a C. Too many dumbass decisions by the developers. Dieing over and over again, before I was finally able to work out that you had to do a bunch of actions IN THE MIDDLE OF A CUT SCENE was the last straw. No hint that this was needed/possible in previous cut scenes. Or anywhere.

Great look to the game, but the controls were clunky as well and after the cut scene follies, I did not trust the game to play it straight. Pulled off the hard drive. Thankfully, I got it very cheap.

It was fancy schmancy, ran merely ok on a brand new system with near top of the line stuff. Game as ok, shooting was reasonably fun. The ammo trading system was pretty stupid though.

I just deleted it. My 5770 rarely ever crashed with it, but the game managed to BSOD my new 6850 2 out of 4 starts, right at the logos. Buggy, unoptimized sucker. Somehow it ran fine after starting it in safemode and turning settings up; it just doesn't like starting at those settings.

I agree, however, I think STALKER did it much much better and in a more enjoyable way. I like STALKER.

Yeah i rank this along with FEAR and STALKER in the "couldve been good but nah" category. Also for the horsepower it takes to run it its not that great looking, dosent top crysis on gamer settings never mind enthusiast. I thought the same about FEAR when that came out, horsepower required does not show in the graphical side of things.

Metro 2033 isn't that dark. Either you need to fix your monitor settings, or you didn't take advantage of your flashlight. This isn't Doom 3.

Killing enemies isn't as hard as you make it sound. Maybe with a librarian, those things are huge, but with the rest of the enemies you can take them out pretty easily with a few well-aimed shots. I kind of agree with the semi-incoherent mission objectives though... sometimes you're not sure what to do.

I'm not exactly sure what part of the game you're referring to; where are these supposed cut scenes? I know there are interactive cut scenes, but I didn't experience the same frustration you did. Any gimmicky parts of the game were pretty straight-forward IMO.

That sucks. I had 0 problems playing the game with my 5770. DX10 "High", 16xAF, no AA, 1680x1050. I'll agree that it's unpolished and unoptimized though. Very pretty, but unoptimized. Kind of like Crysis.

Hold on there. FEAR is one of the most satisfying FPS experiences I've ever played. 😉

I think Metro 2033 deserves more love. It's unfortunate that other people didn't have the same experience I had, but I was extremely intrigued by it. It's like a linear version of STALER, with heavier emphasis on characters, storytelling, and drama; all elements that I love. Well worth the $50 I paid for it, and one of the most underrated games of 2010.

I just picked this up today for $29.99 + tax canadian, surprisingly some places discontinued carrying it. Anyhow, here is my take on my hour or so with the game.

1) The Atmosphere: This game is better enjoyed in Russian (yes because i am russian) but also because the things people say while you are walking around make more sense in the native tongue they were created in, not translated to. I think this is a major reason some people get turned off but the lack of full understanding of what the characters are trying to convey to the player. There is also something special to being in a destroyed city/subway when you've actually been there and lived there yourself in real life (Moscow).

The game is not too dark, it used light and shadows very well. Doom 3 was dark, This game is just right, and yes you have to use the flashlight more often. After all, those characters are living underground in a subway!

2) The Visuals: So far i have spent more time tweaking the settings and playing with the config file rather than actually playing the game. That will change when i get it just right. Advanced DOF i believe must not have been coded correctly, there is just too much of a performance hit (about 50% as per HardOCP) with its on. Tessellation is kinda alright, but when you are moving and shooting you don't really pay attention to the fact the character's around you have rounded arms and what not. I also don't like how you cant have more control over the in game settings, but thats what the config is for more or less.

Its just not smart of the developers to make such a showcase when most people cant max out the game. So potential buyers read posts like this and reviews and think to themselves "My PC wount run this anyways so i might as well get COD or whatever that runs smooth maxed out on most machines) Thats how you loose sales.

3) Gameplay: so far after the little train cart scenario in the very beginning the game feels very satisfying. They create scenes similar in a way to COD games where you have certain action you have to perform kind of pre-planned, but they do it in a less obvious way. Its also not that hard to kill the mosters (yet), a few well aimed shots and they are down. The trading of the bullets, conservation of ammo, and little things like that are done to immerse you in the experience, not make it harder to play. They add to the realism of the whole experience.

Overall this game is kind of under the radar because of some of the things i just mentioned. Hopefully my next PC (in a year ??) will be able to max out the settings in this game, but so far im playing 16x10 + high + tessellation + advanced PhysX + DX11 (still tweaking) and enjoying the game...

Dark? You can adjust the gamma. And the difficulty level. You can never really get lost if you are paying attention; did you find the compass? You can switch weapons and if you are smart, you load ammo before a firefight.

it looks like you missed the tutorial completely. 😛

i give it a big fat "B" since the ending(s) was (were) rather weak. i liked the ability to "rambo" it or pick stealth. You have to make damn sure you actually get a better weapon than the one you have to progress when you exchange it.

Graphics are extra-ordinary and it took my GTX 580 SLI to run everything fully maxed out (Very High, PhysX, DOF, tessellation) with slowdowns (still) into the 20s FPS. Fortunately 20s as a minimum is OK, much as with Crysis.

If I recall correctly, Doom3 had an option for gamma under graphics settings, I always make sure that gamma is set correctly when configuring settings.

So I think you could be right.

I personally found the lighting in Doom3 to be really well done.

I've got my gamma and monitor calibrated correctly. I just don't like these kind of games where you cant see anything and the textures look all fake. Like I said, not my cup of tea. I always have my weapons loaded before every firefight. The worst part is my guide who will give me the AK later on will mumble something and walk off. I spent the better part of 45 minutes once I got outside the subway station trying to jump from a car to another across a chasm. My guide mumbled something and walked off. I finally figured out I'm supposed to go another way around but you wouldn't know that. I just thought my jumping sucked (And it does), but thats not the point. This game isn't abnormally hard, its just not "Fun". It would really make this game more fun if they implemented the guide better. Too often he just walks off and disappears and there's no way of knowing what you should do, where he went, etc. I hit the M key to bring up the notebook tab and its not clear what you should do there either. I probably missed a tutorial somewhere, but still, the game should be easy to pick up and figure out what is going on. This isn't. There are too many other game out there that are intuitive, immersive, and fun to play. This isn't one of them. I don't look forward to trying to play it when I have Borderlands, World of Tanks, and other games that draw you in that are much more enjoyable.

IIRC, there are some sections of Doom 3 where it is nearly pitch black, and you absolutely need your flashlight to know where you're going. Metro 2033 wasn't as bad. (Maybe if I went back and played Doom 3 I would see what you're talking about though).

I played through Doom 3 recently, and there are two segments of essentially pitch black throughout the entire game that I remember. The first one involves you with a mobile turret as your ally, and you fight imps which spawn at range and light themselves up with the fireballs they throw, so the flashlight doesn't really help you any, and at the same time isn't needed. The second one is a short segment of track that is moving large glowing plasma chambers or whatever, and you are meant to follow them for light.

I am using a fairly well calibrated CRT however, and I remember trying Doom 3 at one point on an LCD, and it was damn near unplayable without cranking the gamma to very ugly levels. Not exactly a recent LCD though, things have improved since then.

I really liked it. I am a fan of games like FEAR, so this was right up my alley. Granted it isn't super polished. There are minor annoyances with not knowing where to go, or with people's voices being hard to hear. The minor problems are more than made up for by the excellent atmosphere and feel of the world.

Also the controls felt fine.

I beat it within the first few days it came out so it's way short, never touched it again either so there's zero replay value. Don't spend a dime on this game until it's ten bucks or so, it's not very fun and the enemies are highly predictable.

But you will go to the movies, spend $10 for 1.5 hours of entertainment, and not complain?

Metro2033 is a good example of why I do not buy games when they first come out. Its a good game, but not a great game. The story line is good, graphics are great,,,, but its kinda buggy, like having to use different keys for each barrel of a double barrel shotgun.

Overall, I think metro2003 is worth what I paid for it, which was around $9 or $10 on steam.

OP, it sounds like your main complaint is just that the game is too hard. Have you tried turning down the difficulty?

I haven't played this game myself since it sounded like it's main claim to fame is the graphics, but when I looked at trailers for it it didn't look that impressive.
