Metro 2033 to overtake Crysis in terms of performance demand?

I've been reading up about the upcoming PC game "Metro 2033" and it's supposed to be even more performance demanding than Crysis. It's a RAM and graphics hog. It's the only game thus far which would actually touch 8+ GB of RAM. The GPU recommendation is the the GeForce GTX 480 "Fermi" cards, preferably in SLI. I didn't think any game would soon overtake the performance demand of Crysis, other than Crysis 2.

Do you think Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 would be similar in hardware demand?

the game is practically sponsored by nVidia. of course it recommends the GTX480...

it could also be demanding due to PhysX rendering. time will tell.

I can play it very smoothly at 1680x1050 "High" settings with my 3870/2.8ghz C2D/4gb system. I can't do that with either Crysis game.

Almost all of the work Crytek has done with the Crysis Engine since WarHead has been with optimization. Crysis 2 is supposed to be less demanding that the original.

Cryostasis took that crown a long time ago but it still doesn't look as good as Crysis. Probably has more to do with being a single threaded poorly coded game, though.

I'll wait to see what the textures look like for Crysis 2. I have my doubts since it's being developed for the console too.

Minimum:
  • Dual core CPU (any Core 2 Duo or better will do)
  • DirectX 9, Shader Model 3 compliant graphics cards (GeForce 8800, GeForce GT220 and above)
  • 1GB RAM
Recommended:

  • Any Quad Core or 3.0+ GHz Dual Core CPU
  • DirectX 10 compliant graphics card (GeForce GTX 260 and above)
  • 2GB RAM
Optimum:

  • Core i7 CPU
  • NVIDIA DirectX 11 compliant graphics card (GeForce GTX 480 and 470)
  • As much RAM as possible (8GB+)
  • Fast HDD or SSD

This game is definitely more demanding than Crysis, at least on my system. With everything but AA on max DX10 settings, it's completely unplayable. Crysis was a lot smoother on max settings.

The things that make Metro perform bad just don't seem worth it and everyone agrees. Tessellation people understand but Depth of Field dropping fps in half is ridiculous and something they need to fix in a patch.

You ever play through Cryostasis, it has one of the most epic stories in any game. Seriously, I wish more people looked at the game as more than a benchmark because thats what it seems to be known as. It does run terribly but the story makes up for that. It's that good.

The reviews seem to say otherwise.

The reviews also say Modern Warfare 2 is one of the best games ever made. I suppose you believe that?

Notice all the kids whining at the bottom in comments because they never played a game that requires you to think. The funniest part is that they want Dragon Age to win which is overloaded with fantasy cliches.

Perhaps I should mention that CNC4 got a higher rating than Metro 2033 by IGN, I mean reviewers are so obviously influenced by marketing and hype or paid directly by companies that they're opinions are worth little today.

FYI, one review is not the general consensus. Check Metacritic to see how bad it is.

I already saw its Metacritic score, and you totally ignored why MW2 has such an insanely high score when it probably deserves an 80 at max.

It's pretty well known that if you pour enough marketing money and hype towards a game than it's going to get a high metacritic score even if it's an absolutely average game.

Then what's your reasoning for Cryostasis's low score? MW2's devs/publisher paid off the reviewers to give Cryostasis a bad review?

I play this game even with Physx on with the rig in my sig at 1800x1440 (pixel for pixel higher than 1080p) at DX10 Very High settings with 4x AA and havent had a single problem...like seriously, smooth as butter here!

How can you have a video game sequel which has a graphics engine which looks wonders better than the original, and not be more demanding than the original game?

Have you seen screenshot comparisons between Crysis and Crysis 2? It's like comparing Metal Gear Solid 2 to Metal Gear Solid 4.

Has anyone else noticed this (Metro 2033) has got to be the single fastest loading game in relatively recent history? Once I click on continue from the main menu, I receive the "click any button to begin" dialog before my character even starts his between level narrative. I'm not sure what they have done differently but I wish they would give other developers lessons.

For some reason, my computer takes a good Four whole minutes to boot from BIOS into the windows vista desktop.

This is the first game I can remember since Crysis where I had to lower the settings from very high to get a decent frame rate. Even on DX9. My 8800GTX is started to feel old.

I have noticed this...maybe its loading on the fly? Perhaps its due to the smaller maps/scenes compared to big world games? Either case, its impressive.

LOL! Yeah, something is seriously wrong if you are being serious!

The settings that kill the fps are Tessellation and Depth of Field.

My cards dont support that I guess...plus, from what Ive seen in DX11 benchmarks, the current line up of DX11 compatible hardware already seems a bit slow to begin with. Kinda like DX9 was...sure we had the technology...but what first generation DX9 card was there that could run those DX9 games at the time at high settings fluently? I love the 5xxx series of cards...but even with all that power, DX11 at any setting still seems to be a chore!

rofl the "optimum" setting is a card that isnt even available. Wonderful marketing BS.
This game looks worse than crysis and yet requires more powerful hardware, what does that tell u about the coding? nuff said.
