methods of transfering files from desktop to laptop

can the 2 computers connect directly with an RJ-45 network cable? Do I need to go through a hub or switch? I'm looking for the fastest and easiest method.

You should be able to setup a direct file-sharing network via a standard RJ-45.

Most new hardware can auto detect the connection and configure the ports as needed. A straight through should work, but if not he'll have to find a crossover (or make his own)

Cool - I know all my newer routers and hubs auto-detect, but I just assumed network cards still didn't do that... good to know!

cool, good to know that's possible without a hub.

I just read about a direct Firewire connection between 2 computers. That seems like a very fast transfer (compared to 10/100 ethernet).

Since both my desktop and laptop have Firewire connections, do I only need a "male-to-male" cable? Would I go to "network connections" to find the other computer or have to set up a direct file-sharing network using the 1394 protocol?

Cat 5 can easily transfer at least 100gb of data in the time that you are sleeping. Personally, I wouldnt want to spend the money on a firewire cable. Cables are so expensive.
