Meter readings by Con Edison...

Hrmm, is there a less intrusive way to get the meter readings out to Con Edison than the Con Ed guy coming around yelling, "CON!!" in the morning? Besides reading the dials, is there a device that transmits the information to Con Ed via phoneline? I think my gas meter or water meter has that and since I wasn't able to find anything on Con Ed's website and its after hours: ATOT shall inform me!
