Man what a sweet concert. At the SkyDome in Toronto on July 5th. A few friends and I drove 7 hours to get there from central NY, got there around 2:30. Got absolutely no sleep the night before (huge Fourth of July party that ended at 4, we had to leave at 5:30), but somehow we managed to stay up for the whole thing and drive back that night.
It opened with Mudvayne, who I am not too fond of, but they're not horrible I guess. I had low expectations for them, but they exceeded them. They sounded really good, except for some warbling problems with the mics which lasted all night. They played for about half an hour, and then Deftones came out. Yawn. They sucked. Sounded like a slightly worse version of Mudvayne, and the singer had to keep pulling his pants up every two seconds. I think I might have dozed off during their performance.
Then, it was time for Linkin Park. All of a sudden the place was packed. It was about half full, both the floor and the seats, for the first two bands, but suddenlt every seat was takena nd the floor was like a sardine can. At first, these gys sounded horrible. Lots of sound problems; you couldn't distingus the guitars from the vocals. All it sounded like was a wall of static with some drumming behind it. About halfway through the set, though, they managed to fix it, except for the warbling mic problem still. I'm not a fan of Linkin Park, but they weren't too bad. They played a few songs I had heard, and they sounded okay live. At one point someone got injured in the mosh pit, and they stopped playing and made the people get out of the way until the medics got the person. Kudos to them for that. I dont really remember much else from their set.
Then came Limp Bizkit. I almost got up and walked out just because I hate them so much. It was disgusting; as soon as the lights went dark for them, everybody in the whole damn place gets up out their seats and starts yelling and screaming. How can so many people like this "band?" Jesus. As I expected, they sucked hard, and I wanted nothing more than to punch that Durst guy in the nuts. He played Metallica's "Sanitarium" and I wanted to cry. It was so horrible. It was an insult to Metallica for them to ruthlessly slaughter such a great song. But, I was pleasantly surprised by their sound and the pyrotechnics. Apparently Limp Bizkit knew that since they sucked so bad, they had to do something to make the fans excited. So, they turned the bass all the way up and used copious amounts of pyro. So that was pretty cool. But almost as bad as them ruining Sanitarium was Durst trying to sing The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes." Simply tragic. I was very happy when they left.
Then, it was the moment I had been waiting for. By this time it was after 9 o clock (the concert started at 3) and the excitement was building. Somehow the place managed to fit even more people into it. People came in droves not wanting to miss Metallica's opening. Minutes passed, and still the crew was setting up the stage, which was awesome. Nice backdrops and a cool riser. More time passed. People were getting antsy. Everytime the lights flickered or the music they were playing stopped, everyone started screaming and chanting "Metallica! Metallica!" But alas, everytime we were disappointed. Eventually we started getting pissed. The other bands took about 20 minutes to set up; Metallica had taken more than an hour and a half. Finally, the lights wetn dark. I have never heard so many screaming so loud before. The excitement was almost orgasmic. Then, the moment of truth. The sounds of "The Ecstasy of Gold" flowed through the air, and when it ended, it was just completely electrifying. Then, with the lights still out, the acoustic sounds of "Battery" could be heard. The crowd went fricken wild. When they went to full-on amplification, and the lights came on, I think everyone's heart skipped a beat. Such raw power... It was so awesome. To actually see them up there on the stage, in person, is so much sweeter than watching them live on TV or something. It's so much more primal, and so much more personal. I couldn't control myself and the next thing I know the whole crowd is headbanging and pumping the air with their fists and \m/ signs and singing along to the chorus. What a rush. Jesus. I lost my voice even before they started the song, which, to the crowd's excitement, was "master of Puppets." Good lord. I swear my head exploded. After that was Sanitarium, the way it was meant to be played. Shove it, Fred Durst. No one can sing like James Hetfield, and no matter what, a scratching table is no match for a good old Kirk Hammet guitar solo.
Then they played some of their new stuff, but for the most part it was all from their old albums. Yeah! They played Seek and Destroy, No Remorse, Harvester of Sorrow, For Whom the Bell Tolls (with a fitting image of Cliff Burton on the screens at the final note), Sad But True... Jesus, I cant even remember all the songs they played. After about an hour and a half of them plying, my left ear started feeling like it had to pop but couldn't. I got worried, thinking maybe I had ruptured it or something, but it was fine as soon as the concert was over. They finished with Enter Sandman (of course) which was awesome to say the least. But before that, came something even better. The sounds of a helicoptor and pyros for shells. Everyone in the whole damn dome rose to their feet, shouting and chanting and stomping in anticipation. When the first notes played, an electric chill went through everybody I am sure. It was so incredible. Exhausting, exhilirating, just plain metal.
All in all, well worth the 75 bucks I didn't even pay for the ticket (birthday present from my parents). Even if it was only Metallica, it would have been worth it. They put on a terrific show. I dont even know how we managed to drive back after that; I slept the whole way back and the ones who managed to get a few hours of winktime the night before drove back. I was so exhausted. I had to take today off from work, and I just woke up at 11:30 after going to bed at 1 am. Man thatw as great. Hope everyone had just as much fun as I did over the weekend!
