st anger could have been a lot better with better mastering and a different sound to the drumming (mostly the snare not sounding like a tin can). Death Magnetic really only failed on the mastering

Truth be told, St. Anger grew on me over time...I don't love it but I do at least like it from time to time. That's quite a turnaround from when I tossed it out the window going down the road the first time I heard it :)

you know normally don't pick internet fights but I am bored.

so you lost interest over Metallica fighting against Napster, a band of fucking corporate thieves.

People bitch corporations doing heinous shit except I guess its ok for corporations to steal from musicians...

I remember my cousin, who was a decent guitar player in a local band (who shall remain nameless but they don't exist anymore) literally having to sell CDs and tapes after they played dive bar shows to try to make money as a band....and the day he saw his bands tracks on Napster....and literally smashed his girlfriends computer to pieces....

I can understand people doing file sharing because they cannot afford all the music they would like to listen to...that's the same as any of us making copies and giving out to our families and friends...yeah its a violation but its practical economics...

but a fucking corporation making commercializing theft...and people have the fucking balls to bitch at Metallica over it....fuck all those people.
-----------

As to the music, Metallica is one of the top 10 bands of all time in the broad Rock genre. They went through their experimental phase with Load and Reload and seem back onto their core hard rock/metal/punkish sound. Will we ever see anything as great as the first three albums? No. But then again the same is true for multiple bands.
The thing is, we were all sharing music by dubbing tapes before Napster anyway.
Sigh. It's sad "as a fan". You're one of "those" dicks though IIRC.
Which kind of dick?
You mean you'd rather he be in other bands? I did think it was kinda of lame the way they kicked Newsted out for wanting to be involved in side projects. I wonder if they'll soften on that now that they're doing the "play shows for a couple weeks, then come home" thing.
I love how polarizing Metallica is.
There are always 3 distinct groups of people.
1. Pre-Black
2. Post-Black
3. Love it all

I'm in group #3.
I pretty much only like Puppets, Justice, and Black.

Some of you should check out, I forget what show it was, but they did a week long set of live shows like 3 (or maybe 5) years ago I think. They had a bunch of guests (I recall Black Sabbath's bassist as one, can't recall all who else), including one night where they had Jason and Robert playing bass. There were a bunch of videos on Youtube of it (with decent audio).

Maybe or maybe not. Stern is big on play your hits and maybe one new song. He's been that way for years. I haven't listened enough to know how this set was decided.

From what I've seen (various concert videos and live performances, and also Through The Never), the past few years have mostly been them playing their 80s stuff, with a fair amount of their 90s stuff. I don't know that I've seen any of their St Anger or Death Magnetic stuff get played (but I'm hardly a superfan that has seen all of their stuff).

I love how polarizing Metallica is.

I don't love it all, but I enjoy more than that dichotomy. I like Ride the Lightning through And Justice For All the most, but I actually like the Black Album and a fair amount of songs from their other 90s albums. I think they've been at their most musically talented in the past 10-15 years but have been at their creative worst during this time.

I don't have much hope that they'll find a new creative streak, and they're not going to be able to match their thrash metal days anyway (and James seems set on his vocals). I'm not complaining as they've already contributed plenty enough music to enjoy.

I don't agree. Death Magnetic had very little going for it and it wasn't just because of the mastering. I actually think St Anger was far more interesting. It was a failure and they made some incredibly stupid decisions (didn't they say they didn't want guitar solos because they didn't want it to be dated, but by cutting out solos they effectively dated it far more). But Death Magnetic was them trying to make a modern version of their old stuff because fans told them that's what they wanted. But they really can't do that as they can't get that mental/emotional state back.

Stern show rocked. IMHO the best metallica is sans vocals. Orion FTW

Don't forget Anesthesia :).

How can people not have Metal Up Your Ass...er...Kill em All as a top fav album of Metallica? No Remorse, Hit the Lights, Jump in the Fire,Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy? Love that album.

And...
4. Don't care/don't listen to them

Haha. But if I did like metal and listen to them, I'd probably be in group #3. I can't think of any band or group where I dislike (with a passion, it seems to require) all of their future work after a particular album. Sure I may prefer a group's earlier work, but I still listen to their later stuff too.
