I was just about to bite into my second roast beef sub that I got from Subway when I noticed that the beef looked a little odd. It seemed to have this colored metallic-like coating that made it shiny. It was all different colors - green, orange, red, and yellow. Is this right? I lost my appetite and after a while ate it without the meat.

I'm not sure what it is, but it's happened a bunch of times to deli roast beef I've bought and put in the fridge. All shiny and iridescent, right?

In my years at college I've learned to disregard any visual information that's trying to tell me food's bad. I just kinda eat it. I worry about it later when Mr. Hanky tells me it was a bad idea.

Yeah, that's it.

It was earlier this evening, but I didn't think about it again until I got home just now.

It's probably oil from the lube they put on the machines responsible for cutting the meat, or something. Probalby won't kill ya.

Sir Frederick: No, I've noticed that it develops on the meat after a while of storage. It doesn't affect taste though. And I've noticed it only on roast beef.

Maybe because then it's had time to congeal? I really have no idea what I'm talking about. ;)

maybe its time to stop eating at subways.

i swear the quality of those places varies hideously from store to store and even in each store.

the worst is when the bread wasn't cooked as long as it should have been and then is mushed by the guy making your sandwich.

i got food poisoning from one in july. that wasn't nice.

According to www.fsis.usda.gov...

<Sliced cooked beef or lunch meat can have an iridescent color. Meat contains iron, fat, and many other compounds. When light hits a slice of meat, it splits into colors like a rainbow. There are also various pigments in meat compounds which can give it an iridescent or greenish cast when exposed to heat and processing. Iridescent beef isn't spoiled necessarily.>

You're fine

I worked at Arby's for 3 years as a beef slicer. I guarantee if you use WD-40 you will see that restaurant shut down for good. Only food grade oil can be used.

I was very disturbed the first time I saw that iridescent colors in the sliced beef. I immediately shut down the slicer, stopped making sandwiches, and found the manager. She laughed. That coloring is harmless and tasteless. It occured in about 2% of the roasts I've cut into.

Slightly off topic: One really funny thing I've seen is metal in the roast beef. Twice while I was working there, I heard a sound of metal dropping onto the metal slicer. I looked down and a BB was sitting next to the pile of sliced beef. I guess teens often go to farms and shoot cows with a BB gun. If the farmer didn't notice, the wounds would heal - trapping the BBs in the roast. So you COULD have metallic beef...

The first 3 or 4 times I looked at this topic, I seriously thought it said "Metallica Beef." I wasn't sure if you meant a beef with another band/manager or they were marketing their own line of beef.
