I bet 95 % would answer Cliff Burton, but that's wrong.

Ron McGovney (though he really wan't in the band very long. Frankly, if I was asking the question of "Who was Metallica's original bassist?", I'd accept Cliff Burton as a correct answer.

Frankly, you could also argue James Hetfield was the originally bassist as well, as he played bass on their first recording of "Hit the Lights"
