Konami announced HD collections for Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders during their (pre-recorded) pre-E3 press conference last night.

MGS collection includes 2, 3 and Peace Walker and will release in November.
Zone of the Enders collection includes ZoE 1 and 2 and will release in 2012.

Both collections are coming to PS3 and 360. The PS3 version will support "Transfarring" - a save management system that allows you to transfer saves between the PS3 and PSP.

- Not an emulator !
Optimized and rebuilt specifically for the PS3 & XBOX360 !
- New User Interface created exclusively for HD resolutions.
- Redrawn high-res 2D art, effects and fonts.
- All-new Trophies & Achievements.
- Takes advantage of the PS3/XBOX360 Right Analog stick and Force Feedback
- Transfarring System. (Save management system that locks data to prevent conflicts when sharing between PSP & PS3).
- Improved audio quality.

so MGS collection does not include part 1, the best one by far in the series?

or is peace walker some version of the first one?

I know it's Metal Gear Solid but why not include the original Metal Gear (both MSX & NES), Snake's Revenge, and Metal Gear 2? You can go the Square route and update some of the graphics and release those three for mobile platforms. That's on top of the original MGS being missing for some reason.

Metal Gear Solid is currently being sold on PSN. Also, it is a PS1 game whereas the others are PS2 or PSP, which is basically just a small PS2. From what I can see it's absense could be a combination of licensing or technical reason, given that they aren't emulating anything. MGS2/3 and Zone use the same game engine, whereas MGS1 used something completely different.

As for the earlier Metal Gear games, those were non-Sony system releases so it isn't likely that Nintendo is going to allow Sony to profit from them.

It looks like Silent Hill 2 and 3 are being remastered, too. Konami is on a roll with the HD upgrades.

Hmmm... if the ZotE update is done well enough I'd jump on that. I remember borrowing the first one from my friend for a bit. Was a pretty solid game, but I didn't get very far until he wanted it back.

Shouldn't matter. Yes, the game engines are different and will require a little work to get going on the PS3 but it's not like it's an impossible task. Plenty of space on the Blu-Ray discs.

Nintendo has zero say on this matter. Konami owns the properties. Unless Konami signed some sort of exclusivity agreement with Nintendo that has lasted all these years and is still effective there is nothing Nintendo can do to stop Konami from releasing Metal Gear on a Sony or Microsoft platform. There are plenty of retro games that have been updated and released on newer systems. I mentioned Square and their graphical update of Final Fantasy 1 is an excellent example and it is available on Sony's PS1, PSP, iOS, and of course Nintendo's Gameboy.

I'm inclined to agree with you, except one question has to be answered first which neither one of us knows the answer to. Did they not include it because they wouldn't, or because they couldn't? Let's explore this.

As for the wouldn't, I agree there is no logical reason not to include it. The only explanation is that they felt the investment to update it was too high compared to the potential profits, since the costs are spread across all the included games. Space isn't the deciding factor. Updating a game from one game engine to another is not a cheap thing, and this is an HD update after all.

As for the couldn't, PSN is actively selling MGS1, which means there might be an exclusive agreement right now between Konami and Sony. That is the most likely case.

As for the earlier games, neither one of us can say for sure who has control of those games, regardless of whether Konami owns it.

I don't know anything about rights but the original Metal Gear games (Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake) were released for the PS2 previously as part of MGS3 Subsistence and as part of the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection that was released in Japan.

Depends on which version you are talking about. The version that was released for the PS2 was not the NES version, but a version remade based on the original MSX2 release. The NES version has never been rereleased, and that is the version that most people have fond memories of.

Oh right, I forgot about that. Well, I don't think Kojima likes (or recognizes) the NES games anyway so I wouldn't expect to see them included regardless of licensing issues.

What is it with all the "remastered" games coming out? Developers can't make any new games so they want us to pay for ones we played already?

There is an audience of gamers asking for these older games to be brought back and remastered in HD. It only makes sense for developers/publishers to support that if there's money to be made.

The problem will come when we get past the first round of the most desired games and publishers think they can remaster anything and gamers will buy it.

With these remastered games, I'll just wait until it hits around the $10 price point. I don't feel it's worth full price since I already have it on PS2.

Some of these games 10 years old (some much much older) and the original consoles they were released on as well as the original media can be hard to come by. There is definitely an audience that would pay for them because they are interested in playing them.

Again, example being Square who has re-released FF1 many times over the years in various forms on a slew of systems. I'm sure many in the buying public are buying them again for nostalgia reasons but I'm sure they also get a decent amount of sales from new and younger gamers who would like to experience these classics. There are a lot of gamers who were not even born when the original was released.

There's still a number of games that have held up well in the gameplay department but just look ass ugly today. Spruce it up a bit and you can make money all over again. The current generation of gamers haven't played all these old games, and even if you were gaming when they first came out you may have missed them. I know I never got to play Shadow of the Colossus so I'm very excited to have an updated version of that sometime soon.

MGS1 was already remade using the MGS2 graphics engine. It was out on... GameCube I think. Not sure if it was any good though...

MGS1 is the only game in the series worth a damn, unfortunately. I haven't played 4 but after the shit-show that was 2 and the "we're still making the same exact game after all this time" feeling that pervaded MGS3... I'm not sure I could stomach MGS4.

I thought 3 was good. Anything after 2 would have to be good.

MGS4 had the least game play out of all of them. It was basically just a comprehensive lore machine that not only retold all of the story bits from earlier games, but also tied all the loose ends together. I swear I spent 80 percent of the game sitting through dialogue and 20 percent actually doing anything. That said, it was a great game IF your a MGS fan. If your not, it's going to be hard to love.

All Metal Gear games were extremely story driven with super long cutscenes. Part 4 wasn't any different.
