3 is a big improvement on 2 trust me.

Have you perhaps heard of MGS: Twin Snakes for the Gamecube? It is exactly what you say -- a re-make of MGS 1 with better graphics. It was released in late 2004 or early 05 I think.
Pretty much, though they allow first-person aiming and shooting like in MGS2, which is supposed to make the fight with Revolver Ocelot insanely easy, and a couple of other minor changes.

Just looked at a few screenshots... Looks ok, not a fan of the gamecube style graphics though! I'm hard to please! hehe

Is it a direct remake? same storyline and environment?

Yeah, if you liked MGS 1, you will like 3 for sure. 2 pretty much sucked for numerous reasons. 3 has probably the richest story of any videogame I've ever played.
