The greatest metal band of all time??

Of course you have to count Ozzy and Black Sabbath... But Iron Maiden has by far the greatest number of amazing metal songs
of any band.

For those who have never listened to Maiden... do your self a favor and listen

Iron Maiden.....well.....I can't even find the words what they mean to me. They aren't the absolute greatest band that ever existed in terms of guitar, vocals, bass etc. But factoring all those together puts them at the top overall. Harris is awesome, Dickinson is great, Smith is great, Nicko is great, Murray is great, and Jannick...is very good too. All of their albums show a progression and bit of experimentation that many other bands will then copy (and falter at doing so...except maybe Aria, but we'll get into that in a second). Whatever becomes of the thread there had better not be any mention of them being a hairband or the fires of hell will burn you!

They are also the most underrated and underappreciated band. MTV and VH1 don't do jack for them. They helped start/carried the new wave of british heavy metal. The best part is they're still releasing new albums that do well on the charts, sell out Madison Square Garden over several nights and do full world tours. They've got an amazing live performance (although the opening bands are usually bad...except Dio) Most other bands from that era all died or at least disappeared until the next wave of metal comes back.

If you like Iron Maiden, also check out Aria...they started as a sort of Iron Maiden clone for the otherside of the iron curtain, but since then have put out great albums and have taken a more rock-n-roll direction than Iron Maiden...worth a look though.

UP THE IRONS!!!!

<< I count the heads of those unborn
The accursed ones I'll find them all
if you die by your own hand
as a suicide you shall be damned
and if you try to save your soul
i will torment you - you shall not grow old
with every second and passing breath
you'll be so alone your soul will bleed to death

Autolycus I agree... SteveHarris is an amazing bassist and also song writer.

Those who don't appreciate Maiden don't really know metal!

Saw Iron maiden with Judas Priest---great concert.

The best? Well maybe behind Sabbath. Where does Motorhead figure in there?

Steve Harris IS Iron Maiden. The thing I loved about Maiden was that all of their old stuff was quality work, and there was A LOT of it. How many albums did they put out before Dickinson left? Debut, Killers, Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son, No Prayer, Fear of the Dark, all quality albums, all a little bit different yet they maintained the same Maiden-esque feel to them. To put out that much quality work is pretty rare. My old roommate was a HUGE Maiden fan, and also a very, very good bassist (Rush and Dream Theater he was especially good at playing along with), and he found Harris' bass playing to be pretty challenging. Unfortunately, Maiden gets lumped into the 80's crap metal genre, which they definitely don't deserve to be included in.

*edit* As for greatest metal band of all time? I dunno, I'd say that honor goes to Metallica. OLD Metallica.

well now we are talkin....my bands:

UFO
Motorhead
Saxon
Slayer
Iron Maiden (prefer the original w/ Paul D'anni or however you spell it) Charlotte the Harlot!!
Judas Priest
Scorpions
Raven

Exciter
Celtic Frost
Venom
Metallica (old stuff)
Thin Lizzy
Uriah Heep
All the Sabbaths (ozzy, dio, etc.)
Rainbow
Deep Purple
Zeppelin
Alice Cooper

Tons more.....will be hunting them down with Morpheus!!!

Do you guys remember the MTV show The Young Ones?

<< Steve Harris IS Iron Maiden. >>

I used to agree with this pretty strongly, but I think Bruce Dickinson's later solo stuff (Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding) along with Adrian Smith proved that those two can put out some amazing stuff (Roy Z is in there too, but not as powerfully I don't think).

Anyone hear some of King Crimson's heavy stuff?

I remember the Young Ones, have a few of them on tape somewhere. Only 12 episodes made, I think. Of course, the best episode was the one Motorhead played on.

My faves are the early stuff with Paul Di'anno (esp Killers....that album killed) but the early Dickinson tunes are good too, he's got a helluva voice. The late stuff doesn't do it for me
(after Powerslave) too commercial.

just out of curiosity what have you heard beyond powerslave? (since there were 7 albums after that and each one fairly different from the others). But Killers does rock (I love 'Prodigal Son', and they never did something similar to that again but better that then wearing it out)

Oh man, Iron Maiden. I was first introduced to them in 1998, by a friend and have been hooked ever since. I first saw them live at Metal 2000, Earls Court, London. I even joined the fan club and have tickets for next weeks sold out shows in Brixton!!!

Up the Irons!!!!

Nah. Not the best metal band of all time. They're up there though..

I'm going to have to vote for Metallica. I mean, who else has enjoyed better success? "Sold out", or not.

If you like Iron Maiden, you should check out Iced Earth.

Download..

Dante's Inferno

Yes, I remember The Young Ones episode with Motorhead, played Ace Of Spades of course. Adrian rules!! 🙂

As far as early Maiden, the song Running Free is awesome!!!

Triumph, you have good taste!! (your namesake band was alright for a bunch of Canucks!!)

I am 35 yrs old, guess it shows from musical taste.

OOPs, how can we forget Megadeth!!!!

Just remembered 2 more cool bands:

Riot (not Quiet Riot) with Rhett Butler (I'm in the CIA, and I'll blow your face away!!) Hard lovin Man!!

Accept Udo Dirkscneider(sp?) was cool....Fast As A Shark is still one of my favs!!

Hahaha, thanks for the compliment on my taste, but my namesake comes from the Conan O'Brian character, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

I myself love all Megadeth up to Youthanasia with a passion, and I think Dave Mustaine is a musical genius (hell, he practically wrote Kill Em All), but unfortunately their newer stuff doesn't appeal to me at all. It's probably because of the departure of Nick Menza and Marty Friedman, who have both been personal favorites of mine since I first started playing music. But Megadeth definitely holds a place in the halls of metal history.
