Met a guy who claims to make $5000 net on eBay per month, part-time.

He says he spots garage sales on craigslist, go buys a ton of stuff for a low price and puts them on eBay on sunday nights so they also end on sunday nights. He claims to make about $4500-$5000 / month by this, and this guy works at the same company as I am. I have no idea how he finds time for this because the average work week is 100+ hours for us first year analysts. I don't believe him ?

Ya, sounds fishy..... Shens on the whole thread.....

Not that uncommon if it's a 1st year financial analyst position in NYC. Shens on the ebay part if he didn't give a name.

Hmm...that seems like a lot. Especially if he is working those kind of hours.

I have a uncle who sells on eBay part time. In a good month he is making $1000 - $1200. The majority of the stuff he sells is Amway makeup. He lives for garage sales and flea markets. Most of his summer weekends are spent there. Then sells it all on eBay.

Unless you have an "in" somewhere, it's hard to make that much without doing it full time. I understand why he won't share his user id, sometimes the things we sell for profit are right under or noses, all it takes is user id to see the things being sold, and that would give you ideas. That would be like asking a company to share their trade secret.

5000 revenue or 5000 profit? I can easily see people generating 5000$ revenue by selling higher ticket items.

I remember NFS4 posting an account summary for his Ebay sales. He was running a 10% operating cost just in Ebay & Paypal fees. That doesn't include shipping and time spent aquiring, listing, and running to the post office.

You have to do either an insane volume or run a very high profit margin to do good at it.

I've seen people do that with concert tickets before on ebay, but nothing sustained like he's claiming.

How would he have time to get the items packed and shipped?

Yeah, post office isn't open on Sundays.

Maybe he does the online USPS and has it picked up at his home...

Yeah, ask him some questions about shipping, packing peanuts, tape; and which ebay listing & tracking programs he prefers. Ask how he deals with paypal chargebacks, what he thinks of the ebay's new listing default software, and if he prefers UPS tracking to FedEx. Ask which countries he doesn't ship to.

To really smoke him out, ask a few casual questions about boxes. You can tell a true ebayer by whether or not his eyes light up when he sees an empty box somewhere, ready to be thrown out.

Mind you, it IS possible to make $5000 net on ebay part time. But . . .

That is impressive, I make about $2k-$3k part time. To make $5k a month, Id have to do it full time and then some maybe.
