We all know Messenger that comes with windows, the one that is not in the add/remove programs list, the one you do not download and use at your will, but are forced to use. I went into it, went to options, unclicked Allow run in backround and unclicked open program when windows is started up, but the program still continues to do so.

So, the question is, how do I stop Messenger from working (the preferable option) and/or uninstall it (keep in mind I am not talking about MSN messenger but Messenger, the smaller version that comes with windows)???

I cant believe that after unchecking those boxes, messenger still continues to connect without permissino and without me knowing. Microsoft makes me so angry.

1. Go to Messenger/Tools/Options and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts" on the Preferences tab.
2. In Outlook Express, Tools/Options/General tab and uncheck the option to automatically log on, if it's there.
3. Also in Outlook Express, View/Layout and uncheck the option to display Contacts. The program will open a connection and display a list of all Contacts on line if you do not.
4. Startup Folder. Make sure no entry there for Messenger.
5. Go to Start/Run, and type Msconfig. On the Startup tab , uncheck any option for it.
6. If you are using NAV 2003, disable Instant Messenger monitoring.

The Messenger Service was originally designed for use by system administrators to notify Windows users about their networks. However, some advertisers have started using this service to send information via the Internet, and these messages could be used maliciously to distribute a virus.

This is why I " added " the link.

I still think you're confusing the two. Your link veers off the topic of discussion. ;)

Nope. I know there is a diffrence. Just added the link for additional FYI .. that's all. Geezzz
Problem is, over the last three years, 90% who do the same thing that you did don't realize they're talking about something completely different. No harm done...
