Messed up Sound...need help

My friends computer is all messed up. The sound wont play at all. He had an onboard sound card, so I turned that off and put in my old TB Montego sound card. Drivers too fine, no conflicts or anything. But when I go to play something as basic as a wav file windows says another application is using the sound card and I have to wait till it is done. Even when there is nothing in the task menu when I hit ctrl-alt-del. What is up...please help.

what os? i use win2k and when i first started using it, it didn't say anything was wrong with drivers, but because the drivers weren't designed for win2k, things were screwy.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. It is Win98 1st edition.

try going into safe mode & look in device manager to see if there are any ghost/duplicate soundcard entries under sound,vision & game controllers. if there are, delete them all & reboot. windows should redetect & install drivers!

Would I see something in safe mode that I cant see in regular mode?
