last night i backed up all my stuff onto my secondary drive (where i have my documents folder) and i formatted my main drive and installed xp... now when i try to go to my documents though it gives the Access Denied error and won't open. However it still says the space is being used up on the drive when i right-click on it... any way to recover the data?

You need to disable 'simple file sharing'. Click tools->folder options->view, remove tick from 'use simple file sharing'.

or.........

You need to claim the ownership of the entire directory and then change permissions.

Right click->properties->security->more security->owner
