Message Board Software?

I was wondering what options are open to someone that wants to set up their own message board. We have a site and would like to set up a message board on it that's just for a bunch of friends (though if others start posting there, we really don't care). What software is available? Is it hard to program your own?

GOO! That's a bit expensive. We're really just looking for something for a few guys. Preferably something that doesn't cost a lot ($40 tops). Freeware would be even better. Any ideas?

PHPBB is free and it's easy to install and configure.

You can download the free "trial" version of IPB here -- you just don't get any tech-support with it.
