Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas???

ProfJohn

Lifer
So why do the Brits say Happy Christmas while we say Merry Christmas??

Anyone have an idea??

And does any American born person say Happy Christmas on a regular basis??

Brits say a lot of things differently than us. I guess it's just the difference between the version of English.

They also spell differently... colour, defence, etc.

Because the song goes

:music: We wish you a Merry Christmas .... :music:

and it's been around a damn long time. 🙂

Actually read something about this. In older times "merry" meant "to make". This meaning got lost and now merry means happy.

Am I the only American that spells random words the British way? I've done it ever since I was a kid.

YOU'RE TAKING CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS.

Nah...the "X" is actually the old way...it's supposed to represent the cross or something...

I use x-mas just to irritate the xtians.

No, it doesn't represent the cross. It simply represents the letter chi, which is an abbreviation for Christ.

Merry is a Jewish term and there are no Jews in the UK so they don't know that term.

This is a true story...no really, it is. 😀

That's why I said "or something." I really don't pay that much attention to the religious bullshit...my point was just that using "xmas" doesn't take the Christ out of Christmas.

No, it does not. I don't know where that idea started.
