The pope's job is to save souls. He is saying that gay sex is immoral and, therefore, puts the soul of the "perpetrator" at risk. Thus, the gay person is threatened by his actions if he doesn't keep them in check. The pope would say the same thing about unmarried straight people if they were to have sex, but no one wants to write a news story about that, do they?

It's easier to pick a controversial topic, take the statements out of context of its broader philosophical basis, and make him look like a bigoted idiot than it is to truly consider the merits of his positions. I'm not saying you're doing this, but the media (and certainly just about everyone else in this thread) certainly are.
