Rebuild America First
Words and music by Merle Haggard

Why don't we librate these United States?
We're the ones who need it the worst.
Let the rest of the world help us for a change,
And let's rebuild America first.

Our highways and bridges are falling apart.
Who's blessed, and who has been cursed?
There's things to be done all over the world,
But let's rebuild America first.

Who's on the hill and who's watching the valley?
Who's in charge of it all?
God bless the Army and God bless our liberty,
Dadgum the rest of it all.

Yeah, men in position but backing away.
Freedom is stuck in reverse.
Let's get out of Iraq and get back on the track.
And let's rebuild America first.

Why don't we liberate these United States?
We're the ones who need it the most.
You think I'm blowing smoke. Boys it ain't no joke.
I make twenty trips a year from coast to coast.
All it takes is three chords, six notes and one coherent message from the Okie From Muskogee.

Totally clueless statement of the day.

Very interesting song, especially considering this came from same guy as "Okie from Muskokee" which he released in the Vietnam days:

I'm Proud To Be An Okie From Muskogee

We don't smoke Marijuana in Muskogee. We don't take our trips on LSD.
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street, 'cause we like living right and being free.

We don't make a party out of loving, But we like holding hands and pitching woo.
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy, Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave ol' glory down at the courthouse, And Coca-Cola is still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear, Beads and roman sandals won't be seen,
'N' football's still the roughest thing on campus, And the kids there still respect the college dean.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave ol' glory down at the courthouse, And Coca-Cola is still the biggest thrill of all.

I'm Proud to be an Okie From Muskogee, and Coca-Cola is still the biggest thrill of all.

The above meaningless jingoistic message was presented by the Criminal In Chief speaking from the Oval Office. At the tone, you may leave a message. Please remember, our dulled minds are already made up. Please do not confuse us with facts.

Hell! When you lose Merle, you've lost the bass, the drummer, the lead guitar player, the piano player, the sound guy and roadies, too.

Normally I dont care too much about P&N and prefer to read instead of talk.
But every once in a while I see a comment that I honestly cant interpret.

Was Thera calling Mosh a ******-stain, Iraq a ******-stain or the situation in Iraq a ******-stain?

Uh, yes it was, here's how it played out:

Government: Give me money.
You: Okay.
Government: I'm spending this money on protecting the United States.
You: Can I get that in writing?
Government: Sorry, um... we're all out of writing tools and stuff.
You: Oh, okay. Jolly good, carry on!
Government: Heh, thanks. Now, just a little bit of this and a little bit of that...

*Government drops money down the sink, shredding sounds eminate from the newly installed garbage disposal unit*

Government: Oh, dammit!
You: What happened?
Government: All the mo----- nothing. Just some pigeons took a sh|te on my head.
You: Kill them, Jesus.
Government: I... I can do that?
You: Can't you?
Government: Well, yeah, I guess I can.
You: Jolly good, carry on. By the way, where's my 40 acres...

Maybe that was sort of complex. The short of it is that you gave money to the government and they spent it for you on whatever.

I think it was Mosh the comment was directed towards.

And while such comments are kind of out of line, and not what P&N is supposed to be about, in Thera's defense, Mosh does seem to have this annoying habit of swooping in, posting some condescending BS and then running away...which isn't the point of P&N either.

we've got no choice, thanks to backwards-thinking dumbass white americans who love the hell out of fascism.

how was saying, "if only it were that simple" condescending? the problem is there is so much sarcasm, spitefulness, and hate spewed in P&N that when someone shows genuine concern it is still spit upon.

go ahead and defend someone like Thera. i think his comment was out of line, and uncalled for as was yours.

Merle Haggard is one of the true legends of real country music, like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. He was one of the main people in the so-called Bakersfield sound school of music. I doubt you'll ever hear him on modern so-called country music as he's neither a photogenic model or poppy enough.

His music is well worth checking out. An excellent box set is Down Every Road a 1996 4 CD boxset. The only drawback to this compilation is that you miss the last decade of what Merle has done. Generally I'd suggest a compilation for Merle, as he tends to follow the classic country (or Motown) formula of a couple of great songs per album and a lot of filler. One exception is a personal favorite I found in a cutout bin once, is 1996.

Wow! When country music stars start turning against you and your policies, you've got to know your approval ratings are in the toilet.
