Merging while driving - do you slow down, or speed up?

Unlike most of this rural idiots in this area I speed up to merge onto a freeway at the speed everyone else is going. Basically, I don't disrupt the flow of traffic. They generally hit the end of the on-ramp at 40 MPG and never use the signal.
