Roll your eyes all you want, but for someone who has twice in a single week nearly caused a serious accident because of ignorance of proper driving rules, I don't think very highly of you. Alot of innocent lives are lost on highways because of driver stupidity and ignorance. I will commend you for at least finding out the facts, albeit you should of known this to begin with.

In all 50 States. If you jump into a lane and get rearended it is YOU that is at fault as you caused the accident. If you cannot safely merge, you MUST STOP!

If they are speeding when you merge then they are at fault. Around here, all the a-holes like to do 80 in the slow lane and the merge lane is about 100 feet long after one of those cloverleafs. I have almost gotten creamed a couple of times by guys going way to fast. I asked a cop once and he said that if they can determine he was speeding then the other guy gets the ticket(s) and will lose in court if they are sued. The tricky part is proving they are speeding.

#1) Good luck proving that they were speeding.
#2) You'll still get ticketed for failure to yield.

The real tricky part is surviving the crash!

Like everyone else has said, the guy on the highway has the right of way.

However when it comes to rotarys, it depends on the state. I think most of them
give the right of way to those on the rotary - which makes sense. However
there are a few states, Conn for one, that give right away to those coming on to the Rotary
than those already on it. Don't ask me what moron came up with that one but its the case.

How long have you been driving? Sometimes you just got to play chicken with them.
Everytime before you even get into the merge lane, you have to turn your head to take a glimpse of the traffic and decide which car you want to merge after.

I don't understand people like the ones you encountered. What the hell is the point of keeping someone from safely merging? Is it some macho "I don't want anyone in front of me" thing? I wonder sometimes how many people are laying in hospital beds thinking, "At least it was the other guy's fault." Well, goody for you. You're still hospitalized!

What I don't understand is people that refuse to use the gas pedal when they go to merge on the highway and expect others to gleefully slowdown 30mph to let them in. I get over whenever I can, but the person merging has to make an effort to match traffic's speed before they attempt to move in. SUV owner's and the elderly seem to be in the most confusion about this tactic.

It doesn't really matter how long (or short) the entrance ramp is. I grew up in CO where many of the ramps are like a 1/4 mi long, so you can be a bit more gentle (but still SOOOOOO many screw it up... :Disgust;) but since I moved to NY things are so different. The Palisades Parkway (first US hiwy if my history is correct) has entrace ramps ~30 yards long coming off a sharp turn onto a narrow 2 lane with no shoulders, so you better be prepared to floor it.
