merchants may get credit card surcharge rights

Banned in theory... In practice, it doesn't stop me from seeing a limit on CC transactions anyway. Most of these are mom and pop stores or convenience stores, most likely a 1$0-20 minimum.

The gas station I fill up at offers a regular price per gallon and a cash only price which is $05-.10 cheaper per gallon. Biz owners will usually find a way to not lose money to CC companies, even if it means direct defiance of the rules.

my friends just stopped taking cards at their bar and grill and put in an ATM. $15k in cc fees a couple of years ago...they said "fuck it"

a few people complain, but not many (most are repeat, local customers) and there IS an ATM 10 feet from the register, so its not like its a huge pain to get cash

I pay with cash 90% of the time anyways. I prefer keeping as much as possible private regardless of its actual importance.

Simple solution. Don't shop at the places that have the surcharge. It's already passed on to consumers in the price of items anyway, yet most places don't give a discount for cash purchases.

I always avoid the places that try to charge different between cash and not though.

This is what I don't understand. If it saves you money to use cash, why not? Eventually you learn which places give cash discounts and start incorporating having cash on you as part of your routine when you shop.

Most of the time I can get a bigger discount from my card and or from places with better prices in general. It's not behavior I wish to reward in stores either. Ever hear of vote with your wallet?

So you should get rewards on your CC, and the merchant should always take it in the pants?

They could easily just rase the base cost of all goods, but then that effects everyone.

Again, the only time I see this already in CA is at small liquor stores, and they usually have a $10 minimum to pay by plastic without getting a $.50 fee.

My money comes through cards. If they want my money that's a hoop they have to jump through. The ones that work it into their margins get my money. I don't mind minimum sales; I understand them needing a certain amount of sale for it to be worth it and there's no simple way around that. Also, if it's that small of a purchase then pulling out some cash I keep in reserve the rare time I'm in a small non-chain store isn't as bad.

Unfortunately that's doubtful. Most people could not give up the convenience. (I personally can and will. Fuck paying fees)

This. I will purposely write a check for each transaction and will not start filling it out until the total shows up on the register and all of my items are packed back into the cart. If an online retailer tries this, business gone. I will not give out my debit card online, period.

If they want the business, they can pay the charges....otherwise, piss off.

Edit: Looks like this will happen if the judge approves it: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/visa-mastercard-banks-7-25-011503897.html

So you think that the pricing isn't already built into ALL goods that the stores sell to cover this? LOL

Do you think they would lower prices if allowed to do this? LOL

You wouldn't do this in front of me, but way to go fucking everyone in line and still giving the merchant your money. Way to make a stand bro.
