Hey Everyone,

I was curious if you could give some input on what you have found to be the best merchant account suited for you and what your specific type needs are.

I am talking about accepting credit cards via you or your company's website only.

I know that each have their various rates, different chargeback policys and "hidden fee's".

Also, if you have enjoyed the service of authorize.net, who is your or the best reseller and what percentage rate do you pay for Visa/Master/Amex/Discover?

DISCUSS 🙂

Edit: Avg selling price: $1500 - This is the reason why I posted this discussion thread, because I know from stories that paypal doesnt care about the merchant and if someone does a chargeback, then paypal freezes your funds until it is resolved.

well, i was looking into it about 6 months ago and i found it was very expensive to do anything outside of paypal... now maybe I did my research wrong but paypal has been pretty bulletproof for me.

Having built a ton of websites with merchant accounts I'd go with authorize.net. They are my favorite out of all the merchants I've used. Paypal is garbage and is only good for taking donations. Even with donations it's annoying because the user must leave your site and come back.

Authorize.net requires you to go through a reseller.

The way I understand it, some resellers percentages MAY be lower than others, or may not have lame monthly hidden fee's. Can anyone vouch for any specific reseller?

What if you found a great merchant but their fees are $25/mo plus per transaction? So even if you sell $0 you still have to pay the $25/mo fee? Otherwise they are great and actually offer you (the merchant) protection from chargebacks, no hidden fees, etc.

Most people cannot swallow the $25/mo fee, that's the problem.

What are the advantages of authorize.net over PayPal? I am starting an ecommerce site soon and I am weighing Paypal vs other.

RossMAN - thanks a lot. I understand that you get what you pay for. However, I do not want to pay quite a bit in monthly fee's ($25 for electronic statement monlthy fee) etc etc and have crappy service.

All I want is for my customers to be scam artists, and try doing chargebacks. I know that Paypal could careless about the seller (merchant) for chargebacks.

Avg selling price will be around $1500

One of my web clients uses authorize.net, and are doing it directly now. I think they started with a shopping cart service, but dropped the cart when the went to an xcart site.

Another client uses paypal, and I am setting up premium service tonight for them. I will let you know how much that changes the buying experience.

From the direct payment API page at paypal:

"Direct Payment API offers you direct credit card payment processing capability through PayPal. For credit card transactions, customers stay on your website as PayPal processes the payment in the background.

By integrating Direct Payment API with Express Checkout, as part of the Website Payments Pro solution, you can accept all major payment types, including PayPal, while using PayPal as a single provider that processes and manages all of your online payments for you."

The service is free till 2-1-06, then a typical $20 per month fee is charged.

I wonder how they handle chargebacks and address verification for this.
