mental illness is subjective. doesn't this invalidate psychiatry?

Mental wellness is subjective, and your comment is proof. You may think I am "ill" by continually posting, but you don't seem to realise that people act as they please and your authority to prevent them is limited and even non-existent. Who then is "ill", me who continually posts something, or another who doesn't get basic human behaviour?
 
The symptoms can be subjective. But the illnesses are real. Are you trying to say that mental illnesses don't exist? Believe it or not close to 30% of the US population has some type of mental illness or is learning disabled in some way. Mental illnesses can vary in degrees. For example, a person with Schizophrenia may only have a mild condition and they are able to function and hold down a job. Temple Grandin is a famous woman who has Autism, but with much support from her family and the schools she attended she was able to become functional and be productive in society. She is now an American doctor of animal science, and a professor at Colorado State University, an author and consultant to the livestock industry. Her story is truly remarkable.

Einstein was said to have learning disabilities / mental issues as well.

There are actual changes in the brain that show up in people with certain mental health issues. These show up on CAT scans and MRI's. Brain imaging scans, also called neuroimaging scans, are being used more and more to help detect and diagnose a number of medical disorders and illnesses. Currently, the main use of brain scans for mental disorders is in research studies to learn more about the disorders. Brain scans alone cannot be used to diagnose a mental disorder, such as autism, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. You'd probably be a lot happier if you just accepted your doctor's diagnosis and took your medication.

I'm sure the rest of us would be happy that you did, at least. Alternatively, you can continue to be regarded as one of, if not the singularly worst poster on the forum.

This word "subjective" that you keep throwing about, means what to you? You keep throwing it around as though to make some kind of point. What is the point your making? Try not to use the word subjective and articulate better. Are you trying to say mental illnesses are not real? Made up?

i'm simply saying that psychiatry is false since who or what is "mentally ill" is subjective.

There is a range, and like anything else, stuff like counseling can be abused, especially when drugs are involved. I've worked with the mentally ill in the past, and there's a broad spectrum of what is defined under that umbrella. Some of them are downright scary - severe bipolar cases can be completely unsafe to be around if they are violence-prone. But then there are some people who have depression and just have a hard time getting out of bed, but aren't a physical threat to other people on a regular basis like other types of mental illness are.

Not all mental illness is subjective, but some is, for sure. I mean, even insomnia and perfectionism fit in the metal illness category, and that can be fairly subjective because maybe you're just having a hard time sleeping for the past few weeks, or maybe you haven't slept in 20 years. But if you think all of it is subjective, go do some volunteer work at a local hospital, ward, or retirement home and see for yourself what is real & what isn't.
