I still wear my earring; I've had my ear pierced for going on 30 years now. Never noticed not as many were doing it any more, but then again I just don't care about those kinds of things.

this x2. I have stainless steel hoops, 1 in each ear. I too am in the "don't care what other people think about my appearance" club.

Of course you do. You wouldn't decorate yourself if you didn't care.

that makes no sense... I decorate myself as I please, for my happiness with my appearance, not for anyone else. Some people also don't understand why I have no tattoos on my back or other places I can't see even though I have some on my arms and chest. It's because I got them for ME to look at, not to show off to anyone else.

I used to have a bunch of piercings, including about 8 earrings (inner and outer), when I was young, but all of the earrings are gone now and have been for a very long time.

You're right, I do not see them very often anymore, which is probably a good thing. Still see a lot of poorly done tattoos though. :(

Use to be quite a large number of guys all ages that went in for wearing an ear ring.
Now I see very few. At our local state fair last week, thats when it hit me, very few
guys were into ear rings.
The only guys I noticed still wearing them were bikers, and guys into goth.
Is the fad over?

No poll = epic fail

I don't think it's over but definitely slowing down.

On sort of a related note in the business world at least the second half of the 1990s and first half of the 2000s saw office dress code go down the toilet IMO. Many companies stopped requiring business formal wear and started allowing business casual. It seemed like every year things got more and more casual until people started looking down right sloppy.

Thankfully this has started to reverse from what I can tell in the last few years. Where I am at cargo pants and tennis shoes are no longer allowed for men. Men must wear dress trousers, dress shirts and wear a tie Monday-Thursday. Friday's men can wear polo shirts and jeans but no cargo jeans or cargo pants. This doesn't bother me at all.

Before I get yelled up, dressing business formal is NOT any more expensive than dressing business casual. It doesn't matter of you are paying $70 for a pair of dress slacks at Dillard's or $8.99 for dress slacks at Wally World.

It makes perfect sense. The mere fact you draw happiness from your appearance confirms you care what people think. I've heard a story (not sure if it's true or not) that Einstein had something like 10 of the same suit, so he'd never have to waste time thinking about what to wear. That's a man who doesn't care what others think. It's not a natural impulse to adjust one's appearance strictly for appearance's sake - children don't care about appearance until society teaches them that society puts weight on it. You're just trying to draw attention to yourself while pretending that you're not.

You fail at logic. I do not DRAW happiness from my appearance, i adjust my appearance until I am happy with it. If someone chooses to like me due to the fact I have earrings (or any other aspect of my appearance), fuck that person. If someone chooses to NOT like me only due to the fact I have earrings (or any other aspect of my appearance), fuck that person as well. If I decide I don't like my earrings any more, I'll take them out.

Do you buy $200 jeans?

While whether you choose to wear them or not is up to the individual, yes the "fad" itself is over.
This could certainly vary region by region though. Just because its not "cool" in XYZ anymore doesn't mean that its not "cool" in location ABC.

I personally had baby double hoops in '92 and I was often looked at oddly. I took them out probably 7 years ago or so. Same with my tattoos. That fad is LONG past "cool".

If you like them, wear them. If you don't, don't.

Here's a key thing to remember: there are LOTS of different tastes in this world.

I had 3 ear piercings up until about 2002. Once I found out I was going to be a dad they just didn't seem appropriate anymore.

I "fail" at logic? How would you know? You don't even know what logic is, obviously. You admit to adjusting your appearance until you're "happy" with it, then deny drawing happiness from it.

Of course not. That's just silly. Clothes are just utilitarian things to me, and what can $200 jeans do for me that $25 jeans cannot? My wife buys most of my clothes anyway. I only care that I'm clean and hygenic.

Perhaps semantics is getting in the way. When I watch my daughter build something cool with blocks, I DRAW happiness from it, but I do not FORCE her to play with blocks because it makes me happy. Got it?
